I hope some of you coat guys can give me info and help me date these g-1s. One of them is a little more beat up. the leather seems lighter than the other. It is a little more textured and grainy, and lighter brown. It might be goatskin or something like that. The zipper is missing, so no id there. the tag says from Star Sportswear. The id number is mil-j-7823d (wp)

The collar seems to be real fur from a fire test.

What research I did seems to indicate that the id number is later era, such as the 70s i think.

the second one is heavier and smoother and darker leather. Tag has been removed. Zipper is Scovill

Not that it makes much difference, but the DSA number on the Star indicates that it is a fiscal year 1969 jacket. One would have to look up the contract number to be sure as to whether it was produced in '68 or in '69. One thing, it clearly has a mouton collar, which means that the latest is was made was mid-year in 1969.

I'm just guessing, but I think the other jacket is a repro. The wear patterns in the leather and the texture of the leather seem to indicate that is is made of cowhide as opposed to goat. There were plenty of cowhide E-series G-1s made in the seventies and eighties, but their leather was embossed to look like goatskin. Also, they all had smallish dynal collars that didn't look like the collar on your jacket...in shape or color.
