Like the hundreds of thousands of other trees being cut down to make way for the £371million road tunnel, the ancient beech was destined for the chop.

That was until foresters pointed out the wartime1943 carving of a naked woman and the inscription etched on the trunk.

A Highways Agency spokesman said: "It's an interesting little piece of history and we have managed to amend the boundary so that the tree can stay."

Ironic, isn't it, that we can show a pimp in full glory, but not a pinup?
Especially since several pinups post here, but to the best of my knowledge, no pimps? And we'd presumably rather have pinups here than pimps?

Actually, we did have a thread of a BettiePage pinup painted on the side of a house in Washington.
And risque WWII fuselage art.
Its photos that would be redacted.

Frankly, I was amazed that they left the tree in peace. I wouldve thought they mightve chopped it down but saved carving for display.
But its nice to see a 400 yr old tree spared.
