Bruno Rosier's project "un etat des lieux" is having a short shwoing here in Toronto as part of the Contact Festival. If you haven't heard of him, check this out:

In 1992, Bruno Rosier found twenty-five prints dated from 1937 to 1953 in a flea market, showing the same person posing alone in front of famous landmarks all over the world. This discovery was the starting point for a photographic odyssey that was also intended as an exploration of self- representation and the artistic process. Rosier decided to follow this man's footsteps (only his initials, R.T. are known), in order to re-create the same shots half a century laster he dressed and posed in accord with the original photographs. The fifty prints in this exhibition are twin images of such tourist meccas as the Egyptian Pyramids, Niagara Falls and Acropolis of Athens. Through these self-protraits, Rosier disturbs the viewer by exploring an individual's singular identity which ultimately ends up disappearing amid the banality of everyday life and images.

Wow!! After some digging and guessing what French words mean, I found the pics! This is so interesting!! It's almost a homage to the unknown man's travels. I wonder why these ended up in a flea market...

What an interesting collection. Thanks for posting it jake_fink. I read about this a few weeks ago in the NY Times.

Sadly, all our treasures eventually end up in flea markets or the dump. Last year I found a group of postcards written by a solider during WWII to his wife. They were at a flea market selling for $1 a piece. I bought the lot. Here are two of the cards..

Your postcards remind me of something my Dad did back in WWII when he sent letters and cards to his sweetheart (my Mom): in the return address portion he would put his name and then his address, but for the city he always wrote "Isle of View"--so romantic, no?!--Etienne
