Ladies -

I think this was discussed somewhere previously, so I'm not trying to start a new thread. I just can't find the original thread. Can you point me to a discussion thread on this topic?

For those of us who are petite and have long-skirted suits, do you recommend shortening the skirt length?

I'm finding that I don't like the skirt length on me (I'm too short) but feel tremedously guilty in shortening the skirt(s). Your advice is welcome as always. :)

Thank you,

Vintage Betty

I don't know where this thread is, but feel free to move my answer, too :)

I think that women in past era would wear what was flattering, altering items to the best fit and most up-to-date styles. Therefore, it is in this spirit that I alter most anything I want to. Now, if I can, I will keep the original fabric there so it's not a permanent alteration. If I found a museum-quality piece, I wouldn't touch it. But with most things, I want to look good in the clothes, and that means taking up the skirt a little.

WHEW! I am starting to feel less guilty. I only intend to take it up and hopefully retain the skirt material in case someone wants to lengthen it in the future.

Umm...what's your thoughts on a 4-6" shortening of fabric? Some of these skirts are long...

I don't know where to answer you LOL

In that case, I usually cut unless I find a clever way to hem w/o ruining the fall of the skirt. If it's just crazy long sometimes I just won't get it, and if it's an actual gown and not a more casual dress I'll leave it gown-length. But on more regular dresses I'll hack it off. Sorry, but it's true!

I have a quilted 50s circle skirt that I cannot bear to cut - it's thick and covered in sequin-edged paisleys. I'll just wear it a little long, because I think hemming it w/o cutting will make it weird on the bottom. It's all just a judgment call.
