Perry Mason

If you get to watch any Perry Mason episodes, you will often but not always get to see some great hats. LT. Tragg has a great fedora, and wears it with all the panache a police detective can muster. There was one I saw just yesterday where the Wildcatter oil company owner was wearing what looked like a Stetson Open Road that is a good tie in after reading about those geology majors. They seemed to be from 1956-7 to about 1963 for the episodes. As an aside, when I was little, Perry Mason was too boring, now I am intriged by the styles, the attitudes, and the morality play these shows contained.

Warmest regards,

Dude I watch those too. They're running the whole series for the 2nd time and I watched them all. The earliest ones are 1957 and they ran till 1966 I think. Nice fedoras. Great olds cars. And they were shot in the 40's style of camera and direction up to about the 1960 ones.

This is a tough time for pickin a new tv, the switch to hi-def digital only is coming up soon. I hope to get a panel type tv fairly good sized next year.

Couch Potato- constant viewing - all eyes!

Started watching old episodes of Perry Mason; the lieutenant appears to wear a Whippet-style hat with center dent and side pinches; Perry himself wears a pork pie style hat. This show is so much fun for men's hats and fashions--if you haven't seen it in a while, it's worth a look.

A local channel here has been running the episodes for several years now, early in the morning before the first newscast, and I catch them when I get up to exercise. Yes, Tragg seems to go from a side-pinch fedora with a mid-sized ribbon to a thin ribbon model with front pinches. Perry rarely if ever wore a hat; I can't say I recall the pork pie. But Hamilton Burger (who was not evil or incompetent, you know -- it's often shown that he and Perry respected each other), in a 1950s episode, wore a silverbelly or light gray fedora with a wide ribbon and some of the best brim shaping I've ever seen. Of course the brims get shorter as the show moved into the '60s.

I can often guess at the year a 1960s episode was made by the actors, if they went on to things like "Star Trek" or "Man from U.N.C.L.E.", or even "Hogan's Heroes" -- Werner Klemperer is in at least two episodes. In 1962 Burr was out sick for several weeks, I've read. Instead of suspending production, they featured scripts with guest attorney-detectives like Walter Pidgeon, Hugh O'Brian, and -- get this -- Bette Davis!
