Perforated sweatband?

Was looking at a newly arrived Lewis Fly-Weighter sent to me by a friend, and pondered: Would there be any advantage to perforating the sweatband of a fedora like the one in my Fly-Weighter? It's a neat appearance, and I'd imagine it's a little bit cooler as there's less surface area in contact with your skin.

Ideas, anyone?

It should give better air flow Wingnut. Seems to me it would help. Most perforated leathers are for the initials only but this one looks interesting.

Interestingly, I was looking at another hat on an auction site and it had the same kind of perforations in the sweatband that you picture. Do these perforations extend around the entire band or just in strategic locations? I am going to try to find the hat I was looking at to steal a few pictures to share about it. Wait....I found it. This is from a Wormser Derby. It gives you an idea where the perforations are in the band. Is this about the same in yours?

Regards,

J

Well, a Fly-Weighter is a bit of a different lid from a fedora...

That one isn't mine, mine is tan.

Yes, the sweatband is perforated for the entire circumference, except where the logo has been stamped.

I'd love to see this done with fedoras. (Art? *wink*nudge*)

Ah, I see now.
The Wormser is actually a bowler though. ;) I think there is some kind of purpose to having the perforations with a pleated liner. Perhaps they work together to create better airflow.
Looks like Art will be getting out the hole punch for your next hat W. LOL LOL

Regards to all,

Not such a far-fetched idea...I have a stripped down Stetson that needs a ribbon, liner, band, cleaning, trimming (brim is too dang wide, I have a light frame and a narrow face), the works...that would be a good one to try it on.

Is there any way to have these made, Art?

You know, a perforated sweatband would be great for summer hats. I would love to find a supplier, or the tool used to create a sweat like that. Fedora

Gee, sounds like a project of mine Art just got done with not too long ago. ;) I had a stripped down Stetson just as you mention yours is. In fact, here is a before picture. Looks wonderful doesn't it. I will have to post what it looks like now--when I get a picture. What a difference! :fedora: You will probably not believe it is the same hat. LOL

There's a thought...that would look even more unique. (We'll drive you mad yet!)

Another thought would be to make a punch...small-diameter short brass (or steel, since brass probably wouldn't hold an edge for long...) tubes lined up and sunk into a heavy wood block, with the ends angle-spun beforehand to make sharp edges. As long as the tubes have been set in the block properly, you should be able to drop the first few rows of tubes into the last few rows of holes that you punched, and they'd be lined up.

The more I compare the two photos, the more I believe the sweatband is from the same manufacturer. Now, if I could find out WHO that is, I'd be getting me some perforated bands....

I have an original officer crusher cap and it has the same sweat on it. Most military hats of this type had that kind of sweat band. Not many fedoras I have seen have this feature. Why? I'm not sure. But, I know that if not cared for that this kind of sweat band will deteriate fast! Not very strong and just more wholes for dirt to get into eat away at the leather. I have seen plenty of these sweat bands rotted out in many hats I have found. Well, used ones that is.

Any way, I know that crusher of mine is very comfortable and that kind of sweat band is very cool to wear. I believe that most men wore a straw hat in the hotter months or went hatless. I wont wear a felt hat on a hot day. I have no need to stand out in the sun on a hot, hot day either. I have seen many a candid period photo of men out side in the summer time with out hats.

But, that's my idea why that type of sweat band never really was applied to fedoras and such. Felt fedoras were more of a winter hat in most places. So, ventilation was achieved by other means like Borsalino?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s corrugated thing under the sweat band. Or, Dobbs Headspring gimmick. I don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t have all the answers, or any good answers for that matter. Take it away JP. I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢m through, finished, all washed up!

Just me rambling on and on. Sorry,

Root.

Aw, C'mon! You have to be a man like they were in the 1940s. I was wearing my Royal Stetson felt today and my friend was wearing his black Stetson Amish felt. You know how hot it was (97 degrees). ;) By the way, those sweatbands are not perforated for ventilation. Think of all the skin cancer you can prevent with any kind of hat though. :cool2:

Regards to all,

P.S. I do not know everything. I do not even know a scintilla of everything. LOL The last man to know everything was Erasmus and that was in Ancient Greece where there was a lot less to know. LOL

JP, you?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢re a good guy. Well, I have been wearing felt even on hot days my self. But, I would prefer a good panama to a felt on a day that's over a 100. :D

The problem is that I don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t' have any good straws to sport. I have a few boaters, but those things are as hot as wearing a wool coat on the sun. Not very cool in most respects.

I love my felts and I jus like to make them last as long as I can by not sweating in them. I sweat like a bloody pig and it sucks cuz it soakes through to the outer ribbon and stains It. So, I try to wear a felt that I don't care what happens to it.

Regards,

Root.
