I watched Hatari within the last few days and John Wayne wears one of those. I guess they'd be practical in a hot environment, but I don't like the looks of it.

i used to get into bonsai trees, a lot of the oriental gardeners/bonsai i ran into seem to like these, not for me though i would think a full brim shades better

A full brim shades better, but is less practical on the water and/or in the wind. And these have a 5 to 7-inch brim, so a full brim of this size would be quite large and difficult to keep on your head. A ball cap is designed as a compromise between shading your eyes and keeping your hat on your head.

a full brim with a chin strap, :D, i am not fond of those hats at all

The gist then is the hat's of practical, perhaps historical
interest, but not generally to be worn unless turned
to the side like Venus on WKRP. (That pic is a great
find!)
