soooo I'm in search of a full cut, high rise golden age pair of pants, something modern and/or repro. Something that doesn't scream dressy but a bit rugged but that could be somewhat dressed up just aswell.

I find when I see nice looking pants that might have a nice look to them and put em on they just seem obviously modern due to the low rise of the waist.

I have a pair of gatsby linen pants from j peterman which are great although too thin for everyday at work for me and linen isn't something I can wear all the time either since it has to be pressed so often. So I'd like to find something with a similar cut, but wool.
I'm interested in these here although I wonder if you wore a thicker belt than what they're modeling them with it might look much more 30's-40's... also for that matter, if they could make any without belt loops entirely or were open to various suggestions for one off version of their pants. (fish tails, back buckles, flapped coin pockets etc..)

THOOOOOUGHTS?!?!? :)

Bill's Khaki's are a good alternative.

Bill's makes a great pant - I have, wear and love mine.

But if you can find the Haspel '1908' khaki, I'd go with that. The fella who owns the Haspel label now (among others) liked his Bill's so much, he took a pair to his Haspel people and told them to knock it off. They did -- and well -- for about half the price!

If you check out the Ralph Lauren outlet now and again he has higher waisted trousers though it is hit and miss though the green label trousers do have a higher rise and wider leg.

You can sometimes scoop up peterman trousers on Ebay though they are limited styles and as you said the fabric is thin on a lot of those styles.

I'll have to do some research.

Did anyone take a look at the link I posted above? here are some of the pictures, I think with a normal sized belt maybe these might look pre-50's...? errr, maybe!?

I can see where you're going with that. I think for the price, you can maybe get some that are closer to what you're after. But those are nice. I'd love to get my hands on a pair to look at the construction.

I think the 'look' will depend on your height, too. But it's definitely work-able.

Cut of the pants?

Those pants you linked to are heavily styled after the early 1950's Hollywood waisted pants. That plus the thin belt caters to the rockabilly scene.
I'm a little worried about the one photo where it almost looks like the waistline is *pulling* inward, but it could be the model, or just the alteration job on the pants.
$150 is steep though, especially consider they are wool, solid colors. IF you want Hollywood waisted pants, try local stores- Swellegant Vintage might have some.
(Note to self: Get my pants-making skills DOWN so I can make a few and sell them!)

yeah I'm wondering though if you got a nice thick belt, and paired it with some equally styled earlier clothing, it could look even 20's-30's looking somewhat. Am I waaaay off?! lol

I've seen these in person. They are ok. They have a large button at the waist which to me looks bad, but I'm sure you could change that.

Hey Mike,

I suggest if you are in LA, just make the trek to Culver City and try 'em on. Tarantula uses a nice gabardine material, and aside from going vintage, $125-150 is how much you are going to end up spending on 'new' H-waisted pants nowadays anyways.

Also, thin belts were introduced in the 1930's and were popular in the 1940's, not just the 1950's.

really? I dont think Ive ever seen them that early. I'd think a thicker belt might make them look older. They don't look like they're pegged either...

I've got a pair of these at mytailor getting cuffed as we speak. While I don't like them as much as any of my vintage H-pants, they're not bad. They're not pegged, but certainly an early '50s style.

Resortes...I'm not at impressed with the gab as I was hoping I would be, but overall I'm satisfied. I'm assuming you have seen other works from Tarantula?

Flattop...You're right about the button.

I don't think I'd call these rugged. You could use a thicker belt, but the look would not drastically change.

Oxxford (MTM) can whip up Golden Era trousers with ease; high rise Hollywood waist, dropped belt loops, full cut, etc....They've been America's preeminent suitmaker since 1916 and they've kept all their patterns since day one. Simply choose a more casual fabric (cavalry twill, moleskin, whipcord, etc...) if you wish to dress down the trousers.

I did the thumb & finger rub test on the navy blue and tan, and they certainly have the smoothness I usually look for, but the fabric is certainly lighter than most vintage gabs I've come across. I'm usually not as discriminating when it comes to repro becuase I'm usually looking for items that I can beat up and not feel bad about ruining a piece of history.

You could also try D.L. Cerney in NYC, but they charge just as much, if not more, if I remember correctly.

Yup, Cerney's will set you back about $180, but those slacks are definitively early 1940's and cartoonishly high waisted (the way I like 'em!)

Do you have some or know anyone who does? I would love to see some pics!
