I came across this text while trying to improve my touch typing skills with an online practice test at typeonline.co.uk. The source is The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie
"The girls could not take off their panama hats because this was not far from the school gates and hatlessness was an offence. Certain departures from the proper set of the hat on the head were overlooked in case of fourth-form girls and upwards so long as nobody wore their hat at an angle."
I know that a lady, in some periods of Western culture, was expected to wear a hat in public, but I never thought of that hat as being a panama hat. I'm also intrigued by the importance of avoiding an angle. What might that imply?
According to Wikipedia, it takes place in Scotland, somewhere around the 30s or 40s. An odd place and time for panama hats, no?
