So my girlfriend has a friend, and this friend has a friend who has tickets for the Metropolitan Opera that he can't use, and my girlfriend's friend can't use them (working, drat!) so guess what! We could use them! This seems to happen to us with sickening regularity! Anyway, we went to the Met last night and saw the fabulous Julie Taymor production of Magic Flute. We had seats in the front row, center third balcony (Dress Circle? Whatever). Wow! What a fabulous production. But for once I remembered to bring opera glasses. I had my reading glasses, my distance glasses, my opera glasses and my field gasses, so I was well prepared to see everything, and I did. I finally remembered to bring the ancient pair that has been in the family since God knows when. I know for sure they were used at the Old Met many decades ago, and I finally brought them and used them at the new Met. I have no real reason to believe this, but I suspect that my great aunts brought them back from their 1930 trip to Europe. The edge of the lens says Le Maire Fab't Paris. The leatherette fell off years ago, but I held onto it in hopes of somehow restoring it.
Anyhow here they are:

Nice! Try cleaning the optics barrels and using spray adhesive to apply glove leather to them...much nicer than leatherette.

I gave a very similar mother-of-pearl pair to my mother for her birthday about 5 years ago. She loved them.

LOVE my opera glasses

Beautiful opera glasses, everyone! Here's mine...they were my mother's, I have no idea how old they are. The name on the edge of the lens is Sportiere, Paris. We're not much for opera, but I do take them whenever we go to a play or the symphony. The metal grips have hunting dogs on one side, and a stag on the other.

Sorry the pics are so large...this is the first time I've tried posting photos. I'm using photobucket, and I'm not sure how to resize.
