Not made in China? It may be worth the premium.

Where are they normally made? If they usually produce them in the Far East, chances are you could simply be paying double for the higher labour costs plus the cachet that a lot of folks attach to the "not made in China" tag. Without comparing them directly with both in hand, based on experience with other brands I wouldn't like to assume there was any appreciable difference in quality.

Where in NYC was the store? The price is likely due to the cost of operating a brick and mortar shop in the city.

How much of Carhartt's regular American range is still made in USA?

Last year i bought a J01 Detroit jacket and i recently got a j140 active jacket. Both were made in USA.

Who knows; they're a private concern so there's no way to find out. That said, they've been operating factories in Mexico for years.

In my local area, there are several different stores that carry work wear. First, there are the department stores. Sears carries several brands, and can have great deals when there are sales and coupons. Then there are the mom & pop type stores that carry a mixture of work wear and surplus type stuff. Their prices are pretty much in line with MSRP. Then there are the trendy boutiques in hip, upscale neighborhoods. They sell these as fashion items, and the prices are marked up.

I tend to favor the mom & pop shops. Better service. They know their product. And most of the time, they have experience in using the product. They'll tell you if there is a weak seam in a particular line, not enough room in the shoulders for swinging your arms, and if the pockets are placed correctly and big enough.

The fashion boutiques usually employ trendy kids who are more concerned about "the look". They know nothing about actually "working" in these clothes, but have a keen eye for what is "pretty" when you're dancing in a club.
