No Front Pinch

Inspired by Bigman's recent Art Fawcett, I thought I'd try my Akubra Sydney with a center crease and no side dents or front pinch in what I understand is the old 1920s style. I like it. It may just be me, but it actually gives the hat a more contemporary look, sort of like a lot of the stingy brims I see out there without the stingy brim if that makes any sense. How does everyone else feel about this?

I really like that, too. I got tired of the diamond bash in my Federation and put a cattlemans crease in it. I like the change but now I'm considering this. "Have spray bottle, will travel" I guess.

Excepting the porkpie these seem to have a more "Aristocratic" or at least "higher socio-economic" associations, or is that just me? They just look less like the hat of someone who gets his hands dirty, for some reason. Less working stiff & more management.

Pictures coming

I'll try to take some pictures tonight of my Sydney with and without a pinch. That's the great thing about the Sydney: You can change the bash every day. It could also be that the charcoal grey (which is almost black) makes it look more contemporary too.

I'm glad to know that I inspired someone about anything. Thanks.

Now, about that look. I have to say that I have received more compliments on my new hat than on any of the other hats I've worn. It's almost strange the frequency that comments are made.

I think that style of crease is a nice, clean look that people do not associate with the "Indiana Jones" look. Not that there's anything wrong with the Indy look, but that there is such a difference in the look that it causes people to view the hat (and the wearer) somehow differently. [huh]

I definitely agree, and wonder why it's so automatic. Maybe the pinch is evidence of someone who puts on and takes off a hat by grabbing it by the crown, without much care (as we all know we're not supposed to do). Lack of pinch puts me in mind of someone with gloves on who is careful to put on and take off their nice hat by the brim only, because it's a valuable object worthy of care.

Watching old movies, I am reminded of reporters (always portrayed as low class) grabbing and shoving their hats on their head as they rush out to cover a story, as opposed to a well-dressed businessman with a homburg or bowler placing it delicately on his head by the brim before picking up his umbrella or walking stick. Or something like that....
