Newbie: Isn't an overcoat just an oversized raincoat?

What is considered a trench coat? Isn't that a raincoat? What is an affordable brand? Is all an all-black overcoat a ganster-Matrix look or is a tan colored one a better more sophisticated look?

Do I a 32 yr old 5'8 male look good in an overcoat/raincoat? Must you be tall (over 5'10) to look good? Wouldn't it make you appear short if you're short?

Must it be worn with a suit underneath? How about with casual jeans on?

Please inform...

Hi Stylin! Great to meet another newbie.

And another 5'8" gentleman. If I recall correctly, Mr Bogart was 5'8", which puts us in very good company!

I've got a very warm dark blue wool overcoat that will be returning to duty in about another four weeks, when the Aussie winter starts to bite. I wear it with my work slacks and sportscoat, or over a suit when I go out. No one's ever commented that I'm too short to wear it, I've only ever got compliments on it. And if anyone did say anything to the negative, it'd be a small price to pay for the warmth the coat provides!

With jeans or khakis, I'm more inclined to wear my Canadian jacket or Aero leather halfbelt. That's just my personal preference!

I would love to get a trenchcoat some time. I can imagine the comments I'd get from the general populace teaming that with a fedora . . . :p
