New review: London After Midnight (1927)

Thanks, Midnight Palace. Now I want some popcorn. Lon Chaney is one of my favorite, if not most favorite, actors. I've liked him since I was a small child. I saw some of this re-creation on TCM at a friend's house when it was aired and I remember thinking this must have been a very scary picture to watch at the time.

Thank you for the review. I saw the TCM recreation and hope a surviving copy is one day found.
Chaney was an amazing actor decades ahead of his time.

Thanks for reading guys :) What did you think of the reconstruction? I think they did a great job with what they had. But there's no way they could've had a still photograph for everything that happened in the movie. You know there was much more going on. With the reconstruction, you were basically able to get the general idea.

When I was young I used to read Famous Monsters magazine. This film was mentioned as lost and all there was available were a few of the creepy stills of Chaney in makeup. The reconstruction is what it is. I did not expect the photos to perfectly follow the film. Having an idea of what the film plot is and watching the TCM reconstruction presented the best possible viewing of London After Midnight.

Indeed, I still have hope that a copy will turn up someday. If a private collector is sitting on a copy somewhere, it may "suddenly" turn up in 2022, when the film's copyright expires. It originally expired in 2002, but the Copyright Extension Act extended it to 2022.

It's funny, this is probably the most famous lost movie and sources who actually saw the film said it wasn't that good of a movie. I think all the interest comes from the fact that Lon Chaney's make-up/costume is so dramatic looking in the movie. He was so amazingly expressive that I think he conveys the depth of his talent just through the surviving stills alone, even if the movie script was only so-so.
