New non vintage Suit?

I'm after a new suit, that would go well with a variety of hats.

By New I mean in that I want a non vintage suit. I think a good hat should look fine with a modern suit. I don't know any Tailors so would prefer it off the peg.

It would be sober, Black or Navy.
Could have pinstripes.
Not double breasted.
Not stupidly expensive. [That probably means non designer]

Any ideas? I'm sick of searching.

Are you willing to buy a suit that was made recently, but has been used by someone else? If so, and if you're okay with buying a classic-looking (but not '30s-'40s vintage) suit online, here are some tips:

Go eBay. The winning bid prices there for excellent, slightly used suits have been going down every year. You can get a $1000+ suit for $75. (I recently did!)

Go for Ralph Lauren Polo, Ralph Lauren Purple Label (though pricier), and such 1990s "classic" designers as Avery Lucas and Garrick Anderson (difficult to find, but well worth the wait).

Be patient. Set your maximum price and stick with it. If you don't win this month, you may the next. Do this, and you WILL eventually get a great suit for a very reasonable price.

I'll stick in my usual plug for Rocacha Tailoring in London - their Cotton Club '40s style single breasted suit is very nice indeed. I have one made up with their Peg trousers in a deep blue worsted with blue and red overchecks. You can expect to pay about £325 for a plain wool suit

A nice start.

Marc, I'm not above buying secondhand, it just worries me that most items on auction are badly sized. A bargain is only that if it fits. I will however give ebuy a good look and see if I'm in luck.

Salv, can't argue with the items at Rocacha may have to resort to something like that. Theres no rush so may have a visit when I'm next in town.

Try this primer on purchasing suits off Ebay. Of course, it's important to verify measurements before bidding.

Salv, do those Rocacha suits have high armholes? Or do you have to argue with them to get them?

Regards,

Senator Jack

Not particularly high, but I've never really worried about the armholes in a suit. Personally I think it's better to get the trousers right.
