new lounger 1st question

Been lurking in the shadows for awhile finally decided to take the plunge and become a member.
My 1st question is...Thinking of my first custom made hat. I like the gambler/ pork pie style, any comments, info or
criticisms would be most appreciated.

Do you have hat experience? Or are you a complete novice? It does make a difference. It is tough to make a recommendation to someone when we know nothing about them. Also, people have different opinions on different types of hats. Basically, what jlee said is it. Get what you like.

I'll give it a shot--the gambler is a good choice for your area as it will provide shade. However, it is not really a "style" that is currently in style. The porkpie is a hat that I would wear--and it is very stylish now. The problem with the porkpie, as I see it, is that many people wear this style a few sizes to small. As a result, the hat looks more like a yarmulke--perched on the back of the head and offering no real coverage. So, two different styles and my take on them. The real questions are these: What are you going to do in the hat? Where will you do these activities? Do you want shade or style? What will the temperature be when you do these things? I also like the question asked above--will this be your first hat? If so, why start with a custom? There are many different styles of hats available and if you are new to wearing a hat, the cost of a custom might be hard to swallow if you decide wearing a hat isn't right for you (but, if you get a nice lid in a large 7 to a small 7 1/8th in 100% beaver--go for it! I'll take it off your hands )

Welcome and I'm glad you like a gambler too. My first custom hat, two years ago, was a gambler from Charles in Lebanon, Tennessee on ePrey who advertises as "Brand New Vintage" Beaver hats. For $200 he made me a 100% beaver gambler in brown, with crown reduced to 4"and brim reduced to 3 3/4". I am in upstate NY and wasn't ready for a big brim or tall top, so it got me started nicely, but conservatively.

Recently, I wrote to him to thank him for 2 seasons' worth of pleasure and he told me he had switched account names on ePrey (to the one linked above), for his custom work and admitted he was building a better hat than he was two years ago! As I told him, my only complaints were that I would have liked a grosgrain edge on the brim and most importantly, that he needed to start SIGNING his work, as it was that good and needs to be recognized.

He is very pleasant and decent to deal with and I recommend him for a basic starter at a very basic price.

Not only was the price right, but his service and skills were very good.

Might look into that when next I have a little cash with which to play....

Thanks for the comments and advice. Been wearing hats since I was a lad and that has been a while. Thinking of gambler style, 4" crown, 3" pencil roll bound brim. 1 1/2 band in moss green with bronze trim and band. Any thoughts.
