Hello all, I've been lurking on the forum for awhile and recently registered. I've also aquired a new top, an Akubra Banjo Patterson(see avatar). I'd like to replace the barramundi hat band with a ribbon and was wondering if any of the more experienced hat folks would have a recommendation?
The hat is for casual wear around town and fly fishing use so I'd like to keep it on the low key side of the spectrum.

Many thanks~

Welcome to the Fedora Lounge Mr. Scary Mc!

I am no hat expert but I think a thin band would be perfect for your avatared hat. Smaller bands for bigger brims.

The more experted loungers will wander in soon.

Welcome!

Hello, Scary Mc!

I've only seen the Banjo Paterson being worn on pics at noggintops.com, and it looks cooler in your avatar! I kind of like the Baramundi band, particularly since the hat has a sort of outdoorsy, more-tapered look than many of the fedoras you'll see on this site. (And I like tapered AND untapered, just depends on the particular hat.)

If you do want to go with a ribbon, I agree that a thinner one will be more in keeping with a western/outdoors look.

Thank you for the compliment. I've spent a few days getting the hat into shape as it has been resistant to change. A lot of steaming on the crown and a spray bottle and iron on the brim to coax it into a 'snap' in the back. One more round with the iron and spray bottle and I think I will have the 'snapped' look that I'm after.
I think a thin ribbon is in order. I wish I had a good non-western hatter in the area.

You guys are a very bad influence. I am now jonesing for a proper fedora!

Keep it

I would recommend that you keep this hat as made..that is , make no changes. If you want a hat with the ribbon, ala '1940's' style...like Bogart or Cagney, make that your NEXT hat. The leather crown band is quite nice and fits the "Outback" look of this hat. Wait a bit, then find a new VS hat or something vintage on Ebay..for a good price. You can then buy and have begun your "collection".

Got two of the Banjo Pattersons last fall, one in fawn, the other charcoal, I like the looks of the stock hatband and prefer to keep them as is. They are too classy to mess with, the way I wear a hat. I do not have to dress to a high business style as I am a hospital pharmacist, usually just a sport coat, tie to work, then lab coat when there. I'm in a minority as most of my peers prefer scrubs, but I hate the things, too unstructred. They have their place, but generally not for me, esp not for to and from work.
