Hi All,
My dad and I used to listen to old time radio programs when I was a kid. The Shadow, Lone Ranger, Lights Out, Captain Midnight, etc. Now that I have my own kids, I'd love to do the same with them. Any leads on where we can listen?
Thanks so much....
There's a lot of people here with better recommendations that I can give but back when I was starting in this business The Mist by Steven King was the one to beat though it might be intense for a little kid. The recent Zorro production with Val Kilmer is also pretty good. For old mystery/crime the Alan Ladd show Box 13 I liked too.
I did one thriller/crime show Unguarded Moment that I still like but the sound effects were pretty wimpy. We are planning on re releasing it with better effects in a few years. I did a ton of westerns, Merrano of the Dry Country and Son of a Wanted Man are two of the better ones. If you are listening with your kid, Merrano has some racial epithets and mild cussing.
If you lived farther East you could listen to AM 740 from Toronto. Theater of the Mind plays from 10 to 11 PM and every night they play one comedy and one drama or mystery program.
They have a pretty strong signal and come in all over the northeast and midwest.
Of course there are other ways of getting the show besides a 1940s tube radio. If you are not that hard core, here is the station.
You can buy some on Ebay on CD which be easy I hate to recommend XM right now because they pulled my 40s music off but channel 82 has all old radio shows. If you want mystery and Sci Fi try Mystery is my Hobby, Box 13 , The Whistler, Escape, Suspense, and Sci FI try X Minus One, Lights Out and Dimension X. But don't forget the Comedies and Westerns.
I have an AppleTV. They have a ton of radio stations that you can listen to. There are a couple dedicated to old fashioned radio programs. One is more general in nature. Two of them are mystery/detective. I'm not sure if they have a separate one for SciFi but I would assume that they do. I just haven't looked through all of them yet. I listen to the detective shows when I am in bed at night. (insomniac)
