Mystery of the 'box back' solved at last!

I was casually perusing the images on the NYPL Digital Gallery site some kind FL member posted a link to a while back, and I came across this image:

I know a few people here have wondered about the meaning of the famous 'box back jacket', and the two jackets depicted on the far right of the 2nd row in the image are marked as box backs, simply a squared-off jacket rather than the 'fitted' or 'conservative' cuts.

Mystery solved, eh? I'm sure Phillip Marlowe's job is safe, though . . . lol

I'd (wrongly) suspected that a box back jacket was one without a vertical center seam in the back. Thanks to you, we see that the term refers to the back's rectangular -- as opposed to hourglass -- shape.
