My Strangest Borsalino

Okay, I know Halloween has come and gone. But what with
all this talk of heavy metal Borsalinos (Barium, etc), I thought
I'd show y'all the hat that always makes me think of Radium.
In fact, it says "TENERO", which means "tender" in Italian,
on the inside label where I expected to find "Radium". The
front of the sweat band has printed, "MIMOSA" (with the quotes),
which I guess is the model name.

Here's the top view. Pardon the impressions from having
sat in a box too long:

Here is a front view, posed on a Spectrochrome, a quack device
from the old days, used to cure almost anything with colored light
(gratuitous freebie for jake_fink):

Here's 3/4 with the bow:

Note that it's a touch furry. It is also not terribly stiff and
holds a lot of shapes. But the fur and bulk do limit a bit what
one can do with the felt.

When I won this on OFAS quite a while back, I thought I was getting
a tasteful homburg. It appeared to be a muted moss green or perhaps
even grey. Boy was I in for a surprise when it arrived. I assumed they
had sent me the wrong hat!

Now the question is, what *is* it??

Is it a zoot suit fedora? It did come from a store in LA:

Is it a soft homburg with no brim binding?

Here is the liner and part of the leather sweat with the store name:

Finally, here is a closeup of the brim edge. It is simply sewn off
at the end:

I tend to think it was meant as a homburg-style hat. But in a
pimpy-party kind of 70s way. What's your guess?

I haven't worn it in public. In fact, if someone loves this hat,
PM me and maybe we can work something out. Meanwhile,
enjoy another unusual Borsalino.

that's quite an odd hat you've got there.
i really don't know what else to say.
I'm trying to figure out if I love it or if I hate it.

That's a weird one for sure. Nice, though, all the same.

That's part of what is so confusing about this hat.
It is garish, yet so beautifully constructed out of
such wonderful parts. Classy Borsalino bow, tall
crown, full brim. And yet...

I keep expecting to have the right event to wear
this hat. Perhaps next time Parliament-Funkadelic tour?

lol LOL lol
Oh yeah, so long as it's me and not you!

I really do love the hat and at the same time...
Do I wear it with a fine overcoat and a green feather boa?
That color... that texture... and yet it has a certain class
and body to it...

Well I am headed to San Francisco tomorrow. Maybe I'll
confirm all of Jamespowers' suspicions and wear it there.

That is a wild hat. Weird stuff. What would one wear such a hat with?

Off Topic:Feltfan, where did you get your hands on a Spectrochrome? I thought the government busted all those up years ago. And I think that Ghadiali guy was beyond a quack. He was insane. And he set up shop in New Jersey, my home state, which may explain the absurdity of this contraption.

I have two (and at least one other colored light cure) though
I need to start unloading some of this stuff... Some time
soon I'll make a post in the Display Cabinet about old quack devices.
Here's some info about ol' Dinshah:

http://www.mtn.org/quack/amquacks/ghadiali.htm

The Museum of Questionable Medical Devices has the FDA
"collection". But the feds could not possibly get all the
devices. All they could do was try to stop people from making
outlandish claims. However, they could not stop the creation of
new suckers. Dinshah's nonsense is still believed today by people
who don't understand science:

http://www.ccdh.co.uk/about/ghadiali-dinshah.htm

http://www.dinshahhealth.org/

I make no claims regarding the health benefits of outrageous
green Borsalinos.

Back to the Hat

I'd still be interested in hearing from anyone who
might know more about this hat. Educated guesses
on when it was made, for what it was intended, what
sort of hat it is... What's your guess?
