Ok...heres the setup; As well as being an Indy nut, I am also a classic spaghetti western nut. I also teach high school and my students are well aware of my peculiarities. One day a student gave me a western hat because he saw it and knew I loved those Clint Eastwood movies and he thought that this hat resembled those hats.
It looked like this

Enter John Penman. I contacted John about fixing up this hat for me (it had no liner and no sweat, and was in desperate need of an overhaul). Even though it was slightly out of his comfort zone, he decided he would do what he could. After MUCH aggravation and dismay over the dismal quality of this felt, this is what he produced.

John took a subpar(to say the least) hat and turned it into something I will cherish the rest of my life. A hat given to me by a student and transformed by a master craftsman. If there is good news for the rest of us in this story, John now says that he can totally make this hat(from quality felt, not junk like this).
John you have earned a customer for life and I can't wait to see what you can do with a REAL hat when I order that beaver raiders later. :D

You look good as Indiana Eastwood there :D

I think that hat has certainly been transformed from a run-of-the-mill to a fine piece - though I always prefer fabric ribbons, I do think that (leather?) band looks really very good. It all melds well together, the leather jacket and the hat. :eusa_clap

Congrats, Travis. You look good in that one. I really like that leather band.

I was able to touch Boxerken's Penman at the Highpoint dinner when we met in Monteagle, and I was impressed with Mr. Penman's work. I'm thinking that I need to have one of his hats to adopt into my hat family, hopefully sometime this year.

A great story and a classy hat; thanks for sharing that post with us. Teachers are seldom recognized or appreciated by their students and its nice to see that there is the occasional exception to the rule.

Hollowpond, a great story and a fine job by Penman - have to keep him in mind. Any craftsman that cares enough to do a refurbishing job with whatever is at hand, with such success, deserves our attention.

Great hatband! I noticed that in the first pictures but the closeup really brought that out.

And kudos to you. I don't have any kids but am aware enough to appreciate how we all depend on the work of teachers. And I have a feeling you are one of the really good ones.

Would you mind sharing the seller of the band? I really like that engraved leather look.

Yeah, I really hope that this post helps show what a great hatter John Penman is. He can do this with crap felt. What he can do with quality felt is even more astonishing. I hope this also points out his versatility. He is not just a Indiana Jones hat guy(although he does that exceptionally well). He is also just a super nice guy and his customer service is par excellance!!!! Come on loungers, put him to the test and let him make that perfect hat for you! I look forward to seeing them posted here;) .

That totally suits you mate !

I'm getting a cheap brown felt standard shaped Western hat that I'm going to try to transform into a "Man with no name" hat.

The official reproductions are way too pricey...

Yours is very inspiring

Penman makes GREAT stuff. He lives close by and I've been fortunate enough to have stopped by twice and chatted with him. The man has a very keen eye for detail.

Spaghetti western hat

That is a great looking hat there Hollowpond! Looks very screen accurate and you wear it well.

I too am a fan of the Eastwood/Leone westerns and I've been looking at possibly getting a hat similar to that of "The Man with No Name," AKA "Blondie," AKA "Monco," AKA "Joe."
The closest I could find that wasn't absurdly expensive was on this website:

http://hollywoodprop.com/spaghettihats.htm

(BE WARNED! This is one of those webpages that features music in the background that can't be turned off. I love Ennio Morricone as much as the next guy and have much of his music, but come on... You might want to hit mute after a few seconds)

They've even got the famous poncho for sale along with the rest of the outfit! (That is if you have ridiculous amounts of cash to throw around and have a fanatical love of Eastwood's famous character)

http://hollywoodprop.com/spaghettiprops.htm

I can't speak for the quality or reliabilty of this company as I have not purchased anything from them. But maybe someone on here has or will and let us know. From the amount of respect Penman has on here, you might be better off getting a hat from him!

:eek:fftopic: On their homepage they've got props from other famous movies if anyone is interested. http://hollywoodprop.com/index.html :eek:fftopic:

Hey Garrett! I figured you'd be on this thread from that signature line of yours! lol
