My Other Panama

Here are some pics of my first Panama hat that I bought last year. It is a great hat, bought from a famous hatter in San Francisco. The weave might be slightly finer than the hat I bought from Art, but only slightly. It was nearly 3X the price I paid for the Panama Bob/Art Fawcett hat...

They are both nice hats but I definitely like the ribbon and shape of your new (BobArt) hat better. The crown on the San Fran one looks a little too short or maybe it is just and optical illusion. Nice choice of ribbon and block on your new one. Keeping care of both will surely make them last a lifetime. :cool2:

Great hat.

Dare I say what you'd have if you pay twice as much?

Remember, we can get the crowns/brims pretty much exactly as wanted. Art likes them big crowned so that is what we try to send. Sometimes it is harder than others, so if patience isn't a problem we can get exactly what you want.

Thanks again.

You can see the slight difference in the closeups. I'd invite anyone to try our $300 or $400 hats...and I'd also invite them to take them anywhere in the world and compare prices.

Okay, James, you asked for it! Here are some pics of me, rather lousy ones, but none the less here they are. First one is my new Bob/Art hat and the next is the hat I purchased last year in a famous San Francisco hat shop...

I love it with these band colors...the traditional black is a bit stuffy at times!

I tell this story all of the time...I never keep a Montecristi for long because people buy them right off of my head.

JP,
I think we should do a Tropical field test on the PB/Art hat. Send it to me for 30 days abd I will wear it in our 110 degree weather and let everyone know how the Montecristi held up. Let me know and of course i will pay for the shipping.

Ok, I had my wife take a few pictures of me in the boater and 1950s skimmer. First the skimmer:

Now the boater:

Remember you asked for it. :p
The boater has the brim slightly up at the front. I am guessing this is due to being stored improperly. I have to have Art flatten it out for me a bit. ;)
The skimmer is interesting because it has the brim snapped down in front and up in back. It is sort of like a stiff straw fedora.
My advice is to get the straw in the next larger size if you are a long oval or extra long oval because they are quite stiff and unforgiving for conforming to the head. The ones you see me wearing are 7 5/8---big but they fit just fine. :p I decided to wear the boater to work today---no one even notices anymore. ;)

I think the boater looks better on you, with the wider brim. The navy and red ribbon on the skimmer is a very classic look, though. Can't tell what ribbon is on the boater.

Very nice hats!

You'd think someone would notice these distinctive hats, though. At least, someone pointing out, "Hey, that doesn't look like styrofoam!"

You are probably right the boater has a wider brim. The boater has a red and white ribbon. I just like the shape of the skimmer better.
I did the picture in the style of one I have of my great-great grandfather. Then when I went to find the picture I couldn't. I do remember that he had a pipe in his mouth though so I have to revise mine eventually. ;)
No one notices anything different out here in California---unless you were naked and then only if you were handing out twenty dollar bills! :p

JP,
I like them both. Which Is your favorite and second where should I buy one. I don't want two just the one you like best. Since I'm a 7 3/8 long oval hat a 7 1/5 right?? One size larger. ?
Thanks alot and you look cool in both to me. :)

Well, gee, I really cannot say which is my favorite. I like them both. If pressed, I would have to say the boater because it is more of a classic style.
Finding them is another story. I had to look long and hard to find them in 7 5/8 and in good condition. The boater is a Stetson Medalist and the Skimmer is a Dobbs. I think they are still being made and there was a link on the Lounge somewhere to the seller.
You will probably want to go to a 7 1/2 if you are a 7 3/8 long oval for sure because they are more round than they are oval. ;) The other thing is that the oval and size differs from manufacturer to manufacturer and even within models. [huh] In vintage I would stick with either a Stetson or Dobbs because they have fit me the best with my extra long oval.

Regards to all,

J
