My first Stetson Sovereign

I had pretty much stopped buying hats on ebay since the prices have gone up to the price of a new custom 100% beaver by Art Fawcett. So when I bid on this it was pretty much tongue in cheek knowing I'd be sniped at the last minute. I even bid a day before the auction was over, not even trying to get in at the last minute. I bid the approximate price of an average new Stetson, $125.00. But nobody else bid??? This hat looks brand new, even the crown looks totally unshaped. I've never had a Sovereign before so I'll be interested in getting it. For those of you that have them, do you see a marked difference in quality from the Whippet? This one has a Mode edge as Stetson called it, which I've never seen a Whippet have. The $124.00 I paid for this hat is more than I have paid in the past, but that was before the lounge had over 9000 members. But it is still cheaper than an Akubra federation Deluxe.

I don't know how they compare to the Whippet but you can't go wrong on that hat for what you paid for it. Now lets see it creased and on your noggin.:)

Wow, fedoralover -- that is just a beautiful snag. Absolutely beautiful. Congrats! :eusa_clap

Some posts around here lately seem to tie the Stetson Sovereign with the Stetson Twenty in terms of quality. That might well mean that, quality-wise, it's up the chain from the Whippet. Let us know! Also, any chance you might be able to post a photo of the liner logo?

Cheers,
JtL

Jimmy, I'll take a close up when I get it. I've noticed that since this financial mess has come up the price of fedora's has come down, at least on some I've been watching, has anyone else noticed this or is it just a coincidence? As an example a really nice borsalino just sold for around $100.

See that Mode Edge? The Sovereigns I have (the Ambassador)
were $20 hats. That makes them twice as expensive as
a Whippet. That is a nice hat.

Sorry my friend, as I said in my first post I was surprised no one bid again as I didn't even try to snipe it. With Whippets and Stratoliners going for 2 to 3 hundred I didn't think $125. would snag it. If it doesn't fit I'll let you have it for the same money.

The Sovereign seems to first appear in a New York Times advertisement for B. Altman and Co. on Oct. 23, 1944. It was advertised for $20. There was no discription.

The next year it was featured in an add by B. Altman and Co. The Oct. 31, 1945 advertisement reads:

"Tip a new hat to fall...the Stetson 'Sovereign' its distinctive lines are achieved with the skilled styling of selected beaver and rabbit felt blend. In shades of grey, brown and willow, with a snappy air that keeps in step with the first brisk days of fall."

The last appearance is a Young's Hat shops advertisement in Oct. 29, 1948. It is still $20 and features a "Mode edge that is felted by hand."

Sweet

Man that is a sweet lid! I wonder if there is a model name inside the sweatband somewhere, as Sovereign is the felt quality designation. I think an untouched hat with a mode edge is a rare beast - I'm green with envy, etc.

Have a couple OR style Sovereigns in various textures. I think it was nemed sovereign because it is a good name:). The felt cvaries between three I have. Verry soft, unblocked, stiff blocked Both were basically new. About late thirty to possibly middle 40's Your judging by the pic of the sweat is real sweet.
