My first Derby, probably the last

I got this Derby a month or so ago, it was listed as a Homburg and being black, the photo hid it's true style. I did not have a Derby yet, and I did ok on the price, so rather than argue, I kept it. It seems like a neat little hat, not my style really, the wife has plenty of comments, that we will not go into here. haha I have heard of L.S. Ayers & Co. , but never heard of Royston hats before. Anyone have any information on them? It seems like a well built hat, as to the age, I have no idea. The add said it was owned by a banker.

It has the frayed ribbon we have been seeing on here as of late. It looks to be made that way, as the hat is in new condition.

The frayed back of the ribbon is actually meant to be that way. It was the style. Don't trim it unless it is really unruly or unkempt. Bowlers like that were the every man hat of the 1920s. They were prolific. So if you have a brand that is not now familiar it is likely a small local custom hatter.

Thanks jp

I had seen the prior post about the frayed edge. first fold that is covered by the top fold is frayed as well and that along with the excellent condition of the hat made me think that it was made that way. Would the bow in the back of the hat being a cord with tassel ends, give any indication as to age or quality of the hat?
