My Black Bowler

I've been wearing it daily... at least for the last few days. I've been down and I suspect the bowler is a way of showing the world I feel a little black inside.

It's not a John Steed thing. I write things and I see they are garbe when I take a later look.

A while back I would put on my bowler and know I was going to work. Going to a wooden desk next to a hat rack with a computer in front of me and a pile of tasks to complete before the day was through. When done with those tasks I would be complete and take the rest of the day to hash through all those interesting things I saw and learned and write some down and share others with my friends. i moved a little and shaked a bit with my old job and I was proud though I understood i didn't know anything and that is what truly drove me to be better than the competition. I'd see some pick away at those above them tearing at the accomplishments and wonder why they would rather attack than admire. I liked to admire. I learned from those I admired and wished to continue learning. My strongsuit was knowing I knew nothing and that goes for clothing too.

Everything tells a story. It's not like the days when Conan Doyle wrote Sherlock Holmes tales and one could see class structures and eating habits by clothes and kemptness of hands. Positions by hats and duties by shoes. Today it's all a mish mash.

I wear the bowler because today I am not upbeat.

Where can't you get the wide brimmed ones... seems as though all I find in shops are wide brimmed with the wrong curl and the crown too sloped.

I'll stick to vintage.

I mean the real vintage ones with wide brims. They used to be avaialable in 2 1/2" and 3" brims back in the day.
I suppose you can get the larger Cambridge bowler today but there are only a few people that make them correctly today and you would likely have to go custom to get it exactly right. I have one source back east but I have to find out prices and specs available. New they will likely cost $500 each. [huh]

wide brimmed bowler.

Some time ago I was intrested in a wide brimmed bowler. One of the nearest seemes to be the Stetson Batt Masterson, which I discovered on this site. I seem to remember that James Powers had one and I was hoping that He might post a pic of one to give me an idea what it looked like. However I bought one anyway to satisfy my curiousity, I cant imagine that I will ever wear it but they are still available for those who fancy a wide brimmed bowler. However Matt I hope the arival of spring will cheer you up any day now.

I forgot all about that. Sorry. They are decent but the brim curl isn't tight enough for my taste. The crown height and brim width are right for me though. I'd have to get out my frock coat and striped pants to wear it though. ;) :D

Olney Bowler: Brim 2&3/8 Side 2&1/2 front - Flat brim - Softer
Christys Bowler: Brim 2&1/4 side & front - Tight curl - Stiff

Christy have moved to a tight curl, a couple of years back standard model was more flat.

It depends on how stiff you want them - In th UK traditionally very rainy hats had lots of stiffiner to keep them from getting soaked. Though for the US I believe gents prefer a softer felt, which also allows you to conform it locally to you own personal requirements.

I knew you would chim in eventually. Good.
The Olney sounds interesting. Any pictures and price ranges? It doesn't have a tight brim curl then?

I got Olney in only last month so still working out prices - but bowler RRP is £89.85 plus postage. Though that as standard RRP and I have some flexibility most likely will be around the same as Chirstys fur felt. ( if you want more detail/quotes please contact me direct )

Olney only do a fur felt only. ( Christys do 3 styles, wool felt, fur, fur+ hunting pad lining) The are softer than the very hard stiffened Christys. I got it in specifically as is a different style, some pleople like flat brims some like curled. Starting with a flat you can then curl it to your own liking.

Other key differences:

Inside is white satin lining as opposed to red christys.
Black leather sweatband as opposed to christys brown.
Christys has a off-set binding on the brim which is typical of neigh-blind hand stitched finishing.
Onley is a standard top and bottom bound equal bound edge typical of hand/machine finishing

With either hat they are both modern and you are getting an off the shelf model. They are not the cheap models you get for gimicks, they are both proper bowlers made by old firms with both many years experience, but at the same time they are not the top end expensive bespoke luxury ones which can set you back around . A good modern alternative to a traditional "hard" shell felt covered, which can still be hand made but are talking around US$700-800.
