Excellent collection, SC. I really like the geometric patterns. I really like those. I have exactly one vintage tie! I like it very much and would like to get more. I also like the way you display yours. Well done!

Have you sent any of them to the cleaners to be pressed? Do they come back OK? Or are they too precious to send out?

Tie Care Suggestions!

Thanks for the kind words Hemingway, I suggest:

1. For wrinkled rayon ties ironing @ home using the silk setting on your iron.
Do NOT use steam setting.

2. If very wrinkled use slightly (to avoid water spotting) dampened pillow case as pressing cloth over the tie in question, then iron over top of it.

3. For stains a "very small" amount of Woolite on a slightly dampened face
cloth has helped me.

I'm not against drycleaners, but my home methods have worked ok for me.
Just after World War II, rayon was much cheaper & more accessible man made
fiber to produce the massive quantity of "swingties" the male public demaned.
They knot like silk ties & tend to shake off wrinkles like silk ties. Peter :)

It's amazing that as many collections I've seen in photos here, in books, at vintage clothing stores and even my stash of hundreds...it's rare that I've seen the same design twice. I'd sure like to know how many different patterns were made. It'd have to be in the tens of thousands.

Those are super!

And don't you hate it when people think, "Oh, he likes ties" and you get tie gifts from Penneys!

:)

"Nono.. not THOSE ties. My ties are... oh nevermind. Don't buy me ties."

Thanks to All!

1. Thanks again Hemingway.

2. Thank You Shanghaijack.

3. Hello Quigley, I think the art directors design teams
went beserk thinking of all the deco styled combo's they
could create in rayon. Just bought a 40's vintage tie
in Frederick about 3 weeks ago, from vintage clothing
dealer on Carroll Street, in that stone building? Thanks

4. Scotrace, how about don't buy me ties from Penny's
unless ther 1940's Penny's Towncraft Deluxe swing ties???
Thanks.

Tie Collecting Suggestions!

Hello Mycroft, here are some suggestions for starting a collection:

1. Go to Amazon.com & get a copy of Ron Sparks book "Fit to be Tied" ties of the 1940's & early 1950's. This is not a "values" book, but tells the story about this terrific period in mens neckwear.

2. Ebay a great source for buying 40's ties search under:
a. swing ties
b. vintage ties
c. 1940's ties
d. deco ties

3. Condition if in doubt about the meaning of the "stated" conditions for the tie(s) up for sale on Ebay email the seller. One persons "very good" may be another persons "fair" condition.

4. Values market/collector driven surf Ebay auctions under some of the stated search categories to see what bidders are willing to pay to win the auction.

Have fun & wear those ties with your 1940's fedoras! Peter :cool2:
