Somebody mentioned John Wayne's cavalry hats...

I'd like to point out that he was wearing only one (off-white Boss of the Plains type) hat all the way through the trilogy.

It also appeared in Hondo and Hatari and Rio Bravo (with a different band).

What happened to this hat is as follows:

Wayne loaned this hat to Sammy Davis, Jr. because Davis was doing an impression of the Duke in his Las Vegas act and Davis simply asked to borrow a hat.

Davis' impression consiseted of pulling the hat down over his eyes and saying "Loo, guys! I'm John Wayne!!!" This went on for years and Davis would pass it around the Rat Pack at parties for everybody to have a turn at pretending to be The Duke.

By the time the hat made its way back to Wayne, the brim had been turned up and down so many times that it was ruined.

Most of the visual imagery of the Cavalry Trilogy was lifted virgo intacta from Frederic Remington, so the inspiration was probably something like this:

I've always loved Panama hats myself. These were from The Bribe with Robert Taylor and Ava Gardner:

In the one with Henry Fonda as the new commander, Fort Apache ( I think ), Fonda's character says something about being out of uniform because the slouch hat wasn't creased properly. Somethng like "creased fore & aft as a fedora".
That hat & Clint Eastwood's Rowdy Yates hat from Rawhide.

Wouldn't it be nice if they'd list the wardrobe piece by piece in the credits?
Someone said if they didn't like the Indy hats they were trying on they were probably not accurate...
Where is there a good Indy Hat to be had?

I wear cowboy hats, and usually only when the utility of them makes sense.
White straw Baily's for summer, Charlie One Horse black felt for winter, and a light brown beaver Resistol from my Pa. All fairly short crowned. I don't like 'em settin' too high on the head.
So I don't know much about what you all talk about here.

I have seen a few that sure seem like they'd be nice.
The Hudson Hawk struck my fancy as did Pacino's Godfather and of course, Indy's.

So I think my idea is set then. Credit at the end of a movie so one can find one.
Of course you can all just tell me where to find 'em too.

My All Time Favorite Movie Hat . . .

Is this one, worn by Sam Elliott in The Golden Compass. I could never pull it off, but I think it is such a great hat. Huge....the interesting thing is that it did not come from a costumer. Elliott says he owned it for thirty five years, but never wore it because it was so tall. So it is actually his hat. I wonder who made it???? Maybe I could get the major to make me a mini-version. Truly my all time favorite.

Hi,

That one looks like a "Tom Mix" style hat, also called Ten Gallon Hat", if I'm not mistaken. I have a similar one, made by Stetson in the late 90's. And indeed, it is HUGE.

There's a few hats that've inspired me.

Number one will always be the Herbert Johnson Indy fedora from the first film:

Bruce Willis in Last Man Standing:

Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny wearing fedoras and/or cowboy hats in a couple of Warner Bros cartoons.

ZZ Top in Sharp Dressed Man video.

Costner in The Untouchables.

Robert Duvall as Gus McCrae in Lonesome Dove:

Harry Anderson in Night Court (I know its not a movie, but hey):

This wasn't a great movie, but it is one I worked on many years ago. I just came across this photo in one of my old scrapbooks and thought it might fit in here.

I would like to know if anyone has any experience with Dave Brown hats? I see he did the hats for "The Road to Perdition" and I really like Tom Hanks' hat in that one. Has anybody in the Lounge bought one? Would you recommend him or suggest another for this type of hat?

I have talked to Dave on several occasions and he is exactly what you think an old hatter should be. his shop in the back of the dry cleaners was a little piece of hat heaven and to hear him tell stories of meeting some of the stars was just fascinating. and I have to agree with him that Catherine Zeta-Jones was the most beautiful woman he ever saw.

unfortunately, the wallet couldn't justify the $275 he was asking for a beautiful grey thin ribbon he had (I was able to get 2 new akubras for less than $180 at the time), but if I ever get money to burn his shop will be the first place I go.

as far as construction the hats I tried on and "played" with, the felt was smooth and buttery soft where you could crease it by hand.

Elliot's hat has no side dents, just a sloping crease down the center of the crown. The pencil-roll brim doesn't appear to have a bound edge but it's hard to be certain.
compass-elliottx-large.jpg

The Stetson has a much steeper crease, side dents, and a wide binding but the ribbon seems to be nearly the same width as the ribbon on Elliot's hat.
01.jpg

The Champie has a crease that is very similar to Elliot's and no side dents. It may have a [slightly] more narrow bnding that that on the Stetson. The ribbon is more narrow than that on Elliot's hat.

On balance, I'd say Elliot's hat looks like the Champie with a wider ribbon.
