So, my search for fabric that makes me *squee!* to make a dress with has been wildly disappointing. I'm thinking of making a trek to Mood Fabrics, of Project Runway fame. Has anyone been there, or to the one in NYC? Is it as wonderbar as they say? I'm desperate for cute fabric! I'm all pattern'd up with no thing to make!

I visited the one in NYC once. Wall to ceilings with fabric bolts! they had some really nice shirtings and cottons. I spent so much time looking I ran out of time to visit the upper and lower floors!

Not cheap at all though. I splurged on 3 yards of lovely green/tan gauze with copper sparkle accents and paid over $35. :eusa_doh:
If I had money to burn, oh, that place would be fabricawesomeness incarnate.... I don't know if one would always be guaranteed to find something one liked/needed there (I visited without any particular fabric in mind...), but the fabrics there are almost all really nice quality compared to the box chains.

I bought the silk for my QM dress at Mood NYC in May. It's fabulous and I found the folks who worked there really helpful.

I found a bolt of silk I liked but there wasn't enough yardage for my dress--the woman was up on ladders digging through huge bolts and finally found another bolt that had enough fabric on a bolt in the back. She must have spent 45 minutes digging for me, then knocked the price down and gave me 1/2 yard free on top of it. The NYC store is on the second (I believe) floor reached by an old fashioned elevator with an operator.

Another store I never fail to visit is Metro Textiles--Kashi will never steer you wrong, he's the sweetest guy. If you call him and tell him what you're looking for he'll either pull it for you before you go in or send it to you. His prices are much better than Mood but he has a smaller selection. He's at the corner of 37th & 8th or you can give him a call at 212-209-0004.

wow!

What a fabulous place!! It's like only ever shopping at the 7-11 for food and then walking into a Whole Foods for the first time!

Sooooooooo many amazing fabrics, and the prices were higher, but not that bad. I got a cotton print for $12 a yard and I only needed three. I'll have to post pics later - I got this navy and white pennant and polka dot type print with red as a contrast fabric for a dress. It's unusual and vintage looking - but they had 25 more I was thinking of going back for!
