Absolutely! Think of the Beatles at Shea Stadium (in reverse). I'd probably complement it with black shoes, belt, and hat and a white shirt, but you can play around with it. Black goes with just about anything except for teal blue, which goes with nothing but white.

There's a shop on Etsy called Placid Vintage run by a guy named Brad. He carries a lot of '50's and '60's preppy stuff, including quite a few knitted ties, some in browns and greens (including Roosters). Everything I've gotten from him (quite a lot now) has been really first-rate, with no smells or any of the other problems that can be involved with vintage clothes.
