Missed Mangle (and a couple other random finds)

Hey everybody!

I just got back from an estate sale. What a story! I was at an estate on the river here in Lansing. The home was owned by a prominent builder in the area, and by my best guess, built in the 60's. The workmanship on the home was impressive, and just about everything was original (cabinets, fixtures, furniture!). It was a surprisingly modest size (two bedrooms, combo living room/dining room, and a finished basement). There was a really cool 50s/60s couch that I had my eye on, and it was only $150, but I don't have a spot for it, so I passed it up.

There was also a non-functioning mangle for free! I considered it for about 15 minutes while I blocked the little old ladies trying to elbow past me. In the end, I decided, because it was somewhat rusty, and non-functioning, that I would pass it up. I'm told mangle's are relatively easy to fix as there are only a few moving parts. My friends a block over have one, which I can use whenever I like, so I decided not to schlep the thing home.

I did buy a couple things, though (pictures to follow), including a 60's Stiffel floor lamp and two 11x14 photos taken by the owner. The lot will be going in my 50s-paneled library.

I almost forgot the most amazing (and eccentric) part! It was at a building I've driven past quite a bit since I moved to my house over five years ago. There's a huge sign out front that says, "Audubon Society Refuge--Under Development--Admission 9-5 by appointment only--(some phone number)." It turns out this guy had always planned on donating the property to the Michigan Audubon Society, and thought it would be cool to have the gigantic sign in his front yard. I had wondered about their slow progress on the place, but it turns out it was always just a private home!
