Minor Scuffs at Collar Point on Lost Worlds

Hi - does anyone know what/if anything can be done to these two scuff marks on this Lost Worlds Russet Brown Horsehide Ryder? Typically I wouldn't care, but the rest of the jacket is in nice shape and these two marks are kind of front and center. A bit strange how some of my other jackets are 50 years older but look much better at this presumably weak point.

I don't feel anything cracking, maybe just a bit of dryness and it just appears the leather color is faded here, but I'm not entirely sure. If it's not a safe home fix, I could take it to a specialist for a touch up. Just wanted some guidance. Thank you!

Approximate shoe polish colour will fix that. Just a dab and then rub it in. If in doubt, a specialist would colour-match it, but they're likely to do the same thing with a pigment of some sort.

This "chipping off" of parts of the coat seems to happen to leathers with an otherwise robust topcoat. I have had that on wear spots of an Iron Heart Racer and on my "new" Comp Weight Vanson Chopper.

I agree, it´s somewhat unsightly (certainly if compared to a mild "teacoring" of the whole jacket), but I simply paint it over with shoe polish or even a pemanent marker. It´s certainly not a structural defect.

I would find the closest color of shoe polish and use that. It won't be perfect, but it would get close enough for me.

This is one of those cases where a bit of Urad could possibly help. First dye or color the tips, then use a Qtip to apply the Urad to match the topcoat.

Thanks. There’s just so many products out there. Was also looking at just spending a couple bucks for some fiebling’s dye but now with something else to seal it, it might just be worthwhile to give it to a leather worker for this silly little job

Just be careful painting-- don't make it look worse. Test on a hidden area. And then compare color IN THE RAW SUNLIGHT, not through filtered UV window.

I would leave it... scratches will look good on that jacket.

Thanks, yea I'm hesitant to put anything on the jacket. Normally I wouldn't care about some wear and tear, but from what I've seen, Lost Worlds jackets don't really develop as much wear as other jackets do? Not sure about this, though. If it does develop this sort of uniform spot wear, I'm all for letting it develop some character.

The brown LW hide will do that a bit in certain areas. More so on the thinner LW hides. It looks cool once the jacket is worn some.

Don't worry about it. If it is right in the middle of a smooth panel then yes I would agree with others and use some shoe polish to cover it up, but where it is at now, at the tip of the collar, seems very normal wear points to me.

I've got this what I assume is a 20 some years old russet horsehide LW A2 jacket, and only a few wear spots on the sleeves, similar to what you've on the collar:

The rest of the jacket given its age is just fine:

Leather is grainy, and still a little stiff. The Talon tape is on its very last leg and I have to be very careful but the leather is just fine.

For your collar I would not use any paint maybe just a tad conditioning if you really want. But it's good the way it is.

Thanks for the input and photos - beautiful jacket! I've come to realize appreciate Lost Worlds, I had to buy another Ryder in a brown color in addition to my black one

That's best, the jacket will age and get scuffs, but it will take longer than other jackets.

My brown suburban developed some by now
