I bought a Windows XP Pro disc on line from a reputable company. Then I installed it on my laptop. The disc said it was for OEM installation or something like that...I emailed the seller...

They said that you CAN buy software aftermarket, per a court decision..that means that you PURCHASED the Operating System for your own personal use.

So, all was fine.

Today, my computer went to the Micorsoft Update page..and now..every time I log on (laptop), I get "Your Windows Is Not Genuine"...and it locks up for a few seconds, and gives an annyoing "warning" that I have been a victim of piracy. NOT. I bought this software..and it IS on a GENUINE MICROSOFT HOLOGRAM DISK.

It seems that Microsoft is bullying people into buying a "good" Product Key.

Anyone else have this happen?

I certainly am NOT a pirate, and DO NOT buy copy software.

Would you buy an aircraft on which you had to suddenly plug in some serial number at 20,000 feet to continue flying? It's like renting a hat!

Ye be not the pirate, AndyKev, the Pirates be all in Redmond!!
Drink up me Hearties Yo Ho!!! :)

I've entered one serial number in 11 years. And if I chose not to? The software works anyway.

I bought my XP Pro on ebay a little over a year ago. OEM version. Installed it in the system I built myself the first day of May 2005. "Fine",.....I thought. :) Everything's cool. NOT!
Not over a year later, I get that same crap from Micro$oft's update site! :rage: No more updates for my OS which was for all appearances a legitimate OEM disc! Now I get an annoying nag screen every time I start my PC, and a little pop-up in the lower right portion of my screen every so often, which reminds me that my software "may" be counterfeit.
I tried to resolve this a month ago via email. Sent Micro$oft a pic of my disc, COA, and instruction book, which all looks legit according to their, "How to recognize a counterfeit" tutorial "help" page. Apparently there are some REALLY good holographic fakes out there? My own disc included!?
I have yet to hear from the *#@&%*s! Mean while,....my PC "may be at risk",...blah, blah, blah,.....:(

I hate Micro$oft!!!! :rage:
Scurvy dogs! :rage: :rage: :rage:

I have it fixed, I hope

Well, maybe it was the angriest post you've seen. However, when you buy something like a software OS that runs the computer...and Microsoft seems to badger you, people get kind of hot.

Anyway, I "System Restored" my computer to an earlier time, and the magic update that Microsoft slapped me with today has gone. I now boot normally.

Sad. This is the same concept that if you gave your laptop or desktop to a family member, neighbor, donated to church or school....Micorsoft REQUIRES they buy a new product key.

Bill, haven't you enough $$$?

.....what will happen when you must download another "security" update from Micro$oft?
They got me by sneaking that in as an automatic update. Grrrrr,.....

My assumption is the disc is legit, but the product key has been used too many times by others. It is probably a stolen disc from a company that purchased a volume license. Just a guess. Google search the problem and look through some of the google groups that discuss this. There are some alternative options out there if you search enough...

Thought so too. Nevertheless, the original disc, proof of purchase etc. should be enough for M$ to release AndyKev from this trouble.

What does the selling company say?

I haven't seen this before. IF true, MS can "require" all they want, but it will not affect the PC one bit. It still works and updates normally.

I'm wondering if this isn't because of downloading a sneaky MS update. When I get a notice that updates are available, I never use the Express option, I always use the Custom option and check each update individually.

I noticed a while back that one of the MS updates is titled something like "Windows Assurance Update". If you read it, you'll find that its function is "to assure you that your copy of Windows software is genuine".

Friends, I already KNOW my copy of Windows is genuine. I suspect most users know whether it is or not. So WHO benefits by your loading that update? Only MS, in their role as overseer of unclean software.

I'm generally OK with MS, as I think they provide a quality product and have out-competed their challengers. In US society, that's called "success". But I think this "update" idea is sneaky and underhanded.

I have not, nor do I plan to, download that update.

Aw thanks Magneto.

Sure, this one's on me! http://www.debian.org ;)

I am surely tempted,.....aren't there several other Linux operating systems available? Some free, some for a nominal cost. This warrants some further investigation I think. :) But I fear all the software I have amassed only works with Window$. :(

But wait! I could theoretically use Linux only for online stuff, and Window$ for all the applications I use offline! Hmm,....thinking,...thinking.....:)
