I've seen some of these brands at some discount clothiers like K & G. I think that there are some good deals, especially if you are needing to build a work wardrobe for the first time and have a limited budget. I think it may be worthwhile if you want to "play" with a look and see if it works for you without a big investment. I wou;dn't expect any of these to last very long with regular wear, but if you just need a good-looking, inexpensive suit for a wedding or an interview you can't go too wrong. Just invest in a good tailor.

Given the state of the economy, you can do better with a little legwork. Even big retailers like Jos A Bank or Macy's are having deep discounts on their menswear. I've tried Vavra recently for ties and liked their service- their suit selection has a few interesting looking pieces.

Thanks for the info! It's not for work, as my employer provides my uniforms (I'm a hired goon ;)), but I now have more opportunities to dress-up, and would rather not be seen in the same handful of suits time after time. I figure that if I have I have enough suits, then I won't wear any of them often enough to wear them out any time soon. To do this, I need to be as frugal as possible, as I'm still getting used to paying a mortgage. As luck would have it, there are 3 excellent tailors within 2 miles of me; one of them re-crafted a tuxedo that I had bought from a rental shop such that it looks like it was made for me. All this being said, I am going to take you're advice, and look into the big retailers.

You might consider pre-owned, high quality suits (such as Hickey-Freeman, Oxxford. etc...) which are readily available on eBay for a pittance.

Oxxford does beautiful work, but it's not easy to find my size, 54R (Mamma didn't have any little boys!), much less in double breasted, peak lapel, single button close styles. I do, however keep my eyes peeled for such things, but with very little luck. With the need for extreme frugality, what I do is collect resources that will "keep" until some extra coin shows up, and then I have my shopping research done. It helps me to more efficiently utilize funding that way. I will continue to keep a lookout for those things, and will undoubtedly pounce should the opportunity present itself.

Jos. A Banks is ALWAYS in the middle of a sale, or getting ready to have a sale.

I just took advantage of their latest sale - buy 1 at full price, and get 2 more for FREE!

With alterations and tax, that's three NICE suits for less than a $1,000.

If you're looking for an even better price, check out TJ Maxx. You can often find decent suits there for $200 or less.
