David Fincher, who directed Benjamin Button, is working on something called Torso, about the post Al Capone days of Eliot Ness. Apparently it's been getting kicked around for three years and is based on a graphic novel about a true serial killer case in Cleveland from 1934-38.

Fincher is also interested in Devil in the White City set around the 1893 Columbian Exposition. That'll be quite an undertaking even with lots of matte paintings and CGI. He's certainly qualified with Se7en and Zodiac under his belt. Wait, maybe this half of the post belongs in The Derby Lounge.

I don't know about the graphic novel but there is a interesting true-crime book titled Torso about the case by Steven Nickle. Ness cleaned up the corrupt city of Cleveland but never solved the Torso case. It haunted him for the rest of his life. He didn't live long enough to see how popular Robert Stack's series would become.

More on the graphic novel, ala Classics Illustrated

Torso is a true crime comic book limited series written by Brian Michael Bendis and Marc Andreyko, with art and lettering by Brian Michael Bendis. It’s based on the true story of the Cleveland Torso Murderer.

It tells the story of the real life "Torso Murderer,” a serial killer who was active during 1934 to 1938. He received his nickname because he left only the torsos of his victims. Without fingerprints or dental records, these victims were very difficult to identify in a time before DNA testing. The investigator on the case was Eliot Ness, Cleveland Safety Director and former head of the Untouchables.

Torso was originally published as a six-issue limited series by Image Comics. The series was collected in a trade paperback, Torso: A True Crime Graphic Novel (ISBN 1582406979 ), in 2001, and also published by Image. It also won an Eisner Award in 1999.

Now you know....the rest.....of the story.....Paul Harvey.....good day!

Well from what I've read and heard there is a tossup as to where this movie is going to be filmed. They'd like to film it in Cleveland to stay true to the facts and locations but.... they aren't sure they can get the tax breaks they want. So, that being said, they may end up filming it primarily in Detroit and just doing the facade and outside shots in Cleveland.

It is also now being described as going by the name "Ness" in many write ups.

Needess to say I'll be watching for casting calls and more info! For once... a period movie possibly being filmed at a location near me!!!:D

Another movie about an unsolved true-life serial killer case directed by David Fincher sounds great to me. Zodiac was terrific.

...Plus it takes place in the golden era so we all have some suits to watch even if the movie is boring lol

That would be something to see...excellent book.

Didn't Max Allan Collins (Road to Perdition) have a graphic novel series starring Ness?

He had a series of novels featuring Ness who also shows up as a friend of his Nate Heller character (I HIGHLY recommend the Heller series to all Loungers).
