If it's a light colored Open Road, to me it's a lot like wearking khaki slacks - the color can go with just about anything that's not too close a match. Contrast is usually better and safer than trying to match colors.
My Stratoliner is a light color, and it seems to go equally well with slacks in blue, olive, gray, brown, khaki, and with a variety of shirt colors. About the only thing I wouldn't wear with it is a tan shirt (and the only such shirts I hve are golf shirts), because that would put two similar colors too close together.
In the broad view, a light tan hat probably goes best with earth-tone clothing. However, the lighter the tan color, the more versatile the hat.
All IMHO, o'course.
Here's the Stratoliner, just to show what I consider a light tan...and note that I'm wearing it with a black shirt with tan decorations:
I agree the closer a hat is to a light khahki, the more versatile it can become. Keep your colors pretty earth-toned and or nuetral and you'll do well. It would look especially sharp with a light olive or even navy.
