It's International Women's day, and on occasions like this, there's always talk about abused women, inequality, etc., all negative things. I think March 8 should be about flowers:

I hear ya! :cheers1: there is so much on the positive side of being a woman....sure nasty stuff happens in the world , ( I know, I deal with women all the time that these kind of things happen to) but it seems everyone wants to dwell on the negative, there are so many things positive going on around us that I think we tend to miss the point ( I hope I didn't get off subject there)

ooops... I just saw this thread now, on the 10th!

Happy Belated Women's Day! :eusa_clap

Here in the UK it wasn't really marked as far as I could see, but I know from friends and family that in Romania and Russia it is a big event - especially in the latter.

It is a shame that it isn't celebrated in the rest of the world with the same fervour it is in the aforementioned countries.

March 8, like May 1, has a political background-workers' rights, etc. That's why in North America these holidays were countered by Mother's day and Labour day. Ironically, both March 8 and May 1 were first celebrated in the US.

From Wikipedia.org:

The first IWD was observed on 28 February 1909 in the United States following a declaration by the Socialist Party of America. Among other relevant historic events, it commemorates the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire (New York, 1911), where over 140 women lost their lives. The idea of having an international women's day was first put forward at the turn of the 20th century amid rapid world industrialization and economic expansion that led to protests over working conditions. Women from clothing and textile factories staged one such protest on 8 March 1857 in New York City. The garment workers were protesting what they saw as very poor working conditions and low wages. The protesters were attacked and dispersed by police. These women established their first labor union in the same month two years later.
