Manila Hat?

So I came across a great pic in a reference book called "A History of Men's Fashion." In it there was a pic of Henry Bataille (taken by Dornac) wearing a hat referred to as a "Manila Hat". It was a black and white pic, but it looked just like an optimo Panama. Can anyone tell me anything about these hats?

I think that is what is referred to as a Balibuntal straw if I remember right. It is not the same weave as that of a Cuenca or a Montecristi.
