Her career straddles the Golden Era and WWII, so I came here to thrust this thread into position. Now I think I'll go have a smoke while you folks line up to read this.

Sitting on her plastic-covered scarlet arm-chair in the boudoir of her Gzira home, one would be forgiven for thinking Doris Borg is just a regular sweet old granny. But while she is indeed sweet as kannoli, she also has a more illicit side: she is Malta’s oldest working prostitute.

The silver-haired “anzjana tat-triq“, as she calls herself, celebrated her birthday on January 2, surrounded by prominent politicians, businessmen, lawyers and members of the clergy, all of whom were in costume to protect their identities. “I so enjoyed lapping up their warm greetings,” she beams.

Doris says she has been in the world’s oldest profession ever since she can remember. She comes from a long line of ladies of the night. “My mother was a prostitute, and her mother before her. Her mother was a cloistered nun so I’m not sure what happened there. There hasn’t been a proper male member of the family for generations.”

During her long life, the centenarian has lived through her fair share of momentous events. She has particularly fond memories of World War II. “All those marines,” she says wistfully. “Some historians say the invasion of Sicily might not have succeeded had the entire British 51st infantry division not spent a morale-boosting night with me before they shipped out.”

Expect the British tabloids to be full of pictures of Wayne Rooney holidaying on Malta next Summer...... ;)

She sounds like quite a character. That sense of humour!

Nice to see that her saucy quips (presumably Maltese?) translate so well into English. Oh, wait ... it's a fake article.

Glad you caught that before you finished booking your flight. :D

Well, she certainly has this Bronx lady beat by a mile:

(Story, would you like to take bets how fast this thread will get annihilated??? lol )

Yeah, God knows there weren't no prostitutes working during the era in question.

Speaking of which, there's a fascinatin' passage for the 1920s & 30s here -

The Great Depression brought additional women into the trade, drove down prices, and left many prostitutes on the edge of survival. By the late 1930s hundreds of low-priced prostitutes, charging from $.25 to $1.50, walked the streets and solicited from their jerry-built, one-room cribs. In the city as a whole in 1939 there were at least 2,000 prostitutes. Roughly 40 percent were Hispanic and 40 percent Anglo. Overall, prostitution in the older cities during the 1920s and 1930s was marked by a far greater variation from town to town than had been the case between 1870 and 1910.

Reminds me of that famous quote . . . "attributed" to Joan Crawford (who allegedly made a few bucks on the side in this way during her early days). "I've got one leg in New York, and the other in Atlantic City, and between the two of them I make a pretty good living."

Actually that joke dates to the early days of Variety theater in the 'Seventies, before Albee and Pastor cleaned it up and created respectable Vaudeville. "I dance like this on my right leg, (dances) and I dance like that on my left leg, (dances again) and between the two I make a whole lot of money!"

then, of course there is always the "Crazy House" routine "Rubber Balloons". :)
