Hellooooo ladies,

Now that the weather is getting cooler, and my knee socks just arnt cutting it anymore. Im taking on the project of making my own socks. Im going for over the knee, so I can wear them with a guarder belt. Not knitting, altho that would be cool, but Im gonna experiment with drafting a pattern and sewing some.

I did a mock up last night and it turned out pretty good. So tomorrow Im off to buy a nice cotton knit to test the waters. Ill keep you ladies posted.

Good luck!

I'm a sock knitter myself. They really are easy to knit. Good old fashion mindless knitting. 10 hours later you have a pair of socks.

One word of advice: be careful with the seam underfoot. It can easily rub if you are not careful.

Looking forward to seeing pictures!

Are they really as easy as you say Miss Dottie? I have been wanting to try for years, but assumed it was difficult. The heel scares me.

I have this pattern that makes them so easy--seriously--just knitting a tube on two needles. And the heel is easy peasy! Cat Bhordi has this book called Socks Fly On Two Needles that walks you through it. Once you make your first pair, you are hooked!

And alot of yarn stores have a sock making class that makes the process even easier.

Good luck!

Here it goes Ladies!!

Alright...

I started out with my mock up out of old t shirt material.

Here it is on...

I cut it open once I got the fit right. All the sizing was done from the seam in the back, so I would have only one line to worry about.

Once I drafted a pattern from the mock up, I cut out, on the fold, one sock with a 1/2" seam allowance.

I used the button hole stitch and made sure to stitck open the toes :)

Here is the finished sock, from the back. The toe seam keeps the sock good and in place. I trimmed away the excess seam from the stitch fairly close but not to allow for unraveling.

Ta dahhhh! Finished sock. This one was a bit big in the calf, but its an easy fix of stitching a smooth curved line.

What do you guys think? :D

Thanks,
LD

Wow! And I must add--those socks look pretty darn saucy on too!

Enough to make me put down the ole knitting needles for awhile!

Amazing job and terrific tutorial to boot!

Hurrah for Lady Day!

I knitted some knee high socks in 3ply for the BF last year on two needles. Only thing with two needles is you get seams that have to be sewn up, but otherwise, easy.

Miss Dottie is right, it isn't that difficult with a pattern but with fine needles/wool it is slow going. Not as slow as the jumper I'm knitting him though! lol

I seem to spend my life knitting that boy things and nothing for myself. :eusa_doh:

I don't mean to be too terribly naughty, but Lady Day, I'd love to see more pictures. Oh and see you in them in a full outfit.

I'm just a picture lover, like everyone else. The pictures from the QM event kept me busy for hours. Sigh!
