I’d hope it might be along the lines of vintage 7X CB...I’m not asking for a lot.

Haha! One can only hope. I think I see how your math makes sense though. The Nutria western I have is a lot softer than the beaver westerns, and somewhere in between there would feel pretty close to the 7X.. Interesting.

If memory serves he mentioned he has access to XL mid-weight beaver hat bodies as well. Our first 10 or so emails he thought I was a 60 LO so he was concerned about the dimensions I wanted.

But please order a Nutria from him so we can all see how it is!

Someone else will have to have to go first. I’m a 61-62 long oval so....the website said the bodies are big enough for a 5” crown and a 4 1/2” brim. I’m m hoping I can get 3 1/8 to 3 1/2 inch brim with a 6 inch plus open crown.

He had just added them when I placed my order which was about 1 month ago. When I first started speaking with him he hadn’t added them to his site yet. Michael is very forthright so he would most likely reveal the felt source if asked.

The mid weight is closer to Western than Dress weight. It's an option for larger sizes/larger brims that Dress weight has not been suitable for lately. Winchester is supposed to be working on the problem of larger bodies.

The Nutria is not something he plans to stock but he can get it. He said the Nutria bodies lend themselves more to Western hats. Michael doesn't make enough Westerns to ever want to tie his money up in Nutria bodies in stock. Makes since that he would not want to.

PS: He won't have any Nutria swatches because he doesn't expect to generate many Nutria trimmings.

Thanks. I went ahead and ordered their swatches to get the feel of the colors. The mid-weight “between dress and western” is intriguing. I’d hope it might be along the lines of vintage 7X CB...I’m not asking for a lot.

There’s no standard terminology for the various “weights” of felt. Additionally, not every felter offers a variety of weights. Agnoulita, for instance, offers lightweight, classic weight, men’s weight, and western weight. In the past there was zephyr weight, feather weight, etc. In the recent past VS offered “Artlite” felt.

But this is with Gannon right? when I was speaking with him when ordering my hat he only mentioned dress and western (I wanted a flat brim). I like my Western weight but I could have done with one in between, I've almost taken out 3 friend's eyeballs with my hat already

Those look really interesting
oh my! you can order 1 hat body on this site?? Anyone has done so yet? I'm getting to a point I'd love to make my own hat but I'd need quite a few basics to get started but having read and watched so many videos I feel I have the technical knowledge, the practical is the next part

is this Winchester bodies or another company? I'm curious to know how soft and dense the felt is, it says pre-pounced

What are you getting? Trying that new mid weight that was mentioned here?
Actually getting standard weight but requested it to be the version that is so easily creased. Navy, 6" open crown, 2 3/4" brim with (6 ligne navy bound) and a 16 ligne blue hat band.......

Cant wait! Been contemplating since Red first posted his in process navy hat pictures.

Just got my first Gannon!
the felt quality is good but not the best (I'm comparing to the swatches I got from Hornskov, but FEPSA European felt and he had very limited color selection) VS American Winchester. This isn't a comment on his craftsmanship, just an observation, I was told it's Winchester american felt and it's just not quite as nice of a touch and finish but I'm nit picking.

Overall I'm very happy with the hat. Michael was patient, upfront, very clear communication, detailed oriented and always responded to any questions and brought up any concerns he had or wanted to clarify, even the tiniest of details. I am a very detail oriented person, so this delights me. My other experience with 2 other local hatters (now that I know hats were really subpar craftsmanship and materials) would get upset with me if I asked "too many questions" or pointed something out.

DETAILS
I got a Western weight beaver felt silverbelly
3inch flat brim raw edge with a 6 lignes silverbelly ribbon.
Black sweat band, black lining
The crease is a mix of a Dakota/Canadian with a slight pinch (inspired by a hat I saw from Olivia Wilde wear) and a Donkey kick dent front? I can't recall what it's called.

Here she is! I can't wait to wear her out
this is a mix of some photos he sent me and some of my photos I took real quick.

That looks fantastic— great crease and very nice dimensions. I tend to enjoy western weight felts more than dress or lightweight. Excellent commission.

Thought I would share a little bit about how impressed I am with Michael's service and professionalism. I noticed after only a few times wearing my new Gannon that the print on the liner was smudging into the white just a bit. I mostly brought it up to him in case he had a bad batch or an issue with the ink, definitely not a big deal. I know if I have any issues with my products or services I always want to know about them. Just a few days later I had a new liner in the mail on it's way to me free of charge.

I already had intended to get a second but I'm getting back on his wait list shortly for my second hat once I have my choices made.

Things like that mean a lot, thanks for sharing. Any idea how much of a backlog he has now? You may have prompt me to get one from him also.
