Hello ladies,

We all know a dress, even separates can trurn heads with their vintage appeal. I am a pants wearing gal often, but I find it hard to get my look 'looking vintage' with slacks.

Any tips you would give? I generally wear wide leg trousers cuffed. Maybe its just me not convincing myself.

What would you suggest for the pants wearing women of FL?

Thanks in advance,

LD

I like wearing 1940s-style pants (high waist, wide legs--some cuffed, some not), especially in the winter. For work, I love to pair them with a vintage suit jacket (I have a number of very tailored 1930s-50s jackets), sweater, or blouse (for a more casual look, I will wear a blouse tied at the waist.) With the right jewelry, shoes (wedges, platforms, or baby doll pumps), and hairstyle, the effect is very vintage.

Give up your pre-conceived notions of what woman actually wore then.

Here are some photos of my relatives:

My grandmother at a picnic, around 1930:

My great-great auntie (6' tall!) hiking:

They were normally well dressed ladies, but I don't normally think of 30's slacks and a t-shirt as vintage wear, but there is is.

Here is my grandmother in a more normal dress in the late 1920's:

(Wasn't my Dad a cutie?)

Anyway, I am just glad that I can wear pants to work, it would have been unthinkable 100 years ago. I've heard that in Paris it was illegal to for a woman to wear pants without a licence until something like WWII.

That third pic JitterBugDoll posted is what my pants mostly look like. High waisted, with a longer waist, full legs, some are cuffed, some are not. I tend to stay away from the pleats, makes a balloonish look. I wear that with a blouse that is fitted in the waist. I usually accesorize with pearls, neckerchiefs, that kind of thing. For a dressier look, don't have this yet but want it or will make it, the high waisted pant with a fitted waist blouse with big puffy sleeves. I think that look is ultra girly and I love it.

Another cute thing is to wear it with a sweater like the one in Jitterbugdoll's avatar. More than likely, you'll have to tailor a bought sweater because much like everything else, they just don't make 'em like that anymore. :(

I actually just saw a crocheted sweater in the window of Jones New York that was screaming 1940s, in cut, color (soft mauve) and style (puff sleeves, narrow waist). I didn't look at the price, but this sweater was straight out of an early 40s Vogue magazine!

"got to buy vintage compact, new shoes, cute hankies, new sweater". As great as this place is, it's murder on my budget. lol

That picture, the last one, is my look about 50% of the time. It's one of my favorites.

Back on topic those blouses would work great. Also, Old Pueblo Traders (I think that's the correct name) has this GREAT puffy sleeved blouse, very cute, I just got that. And, thanks Jitterbugdoll, I'm going to check out JonesNY now.

BTW, just saw this, JonesNY is selling a nautical pant that looks promising.

I love that outfit, along with all the other outfits in the Aviator! I think 40's high waist pants are so flattering and look so smart when team with a nice blouse, sweater or jacket!:D

Oh, I know what you mean:) Bye bye money. ANd Old Peblo Traders is a great place. Check out hteir shoes. It seems like places where you would buy secretary, and 'old lady' garb, are the best vintage repo finds.

I think you may just have that "to die for" for figure Maisie. Me, high waist makes the boobs and the waist converge for one of those political summits we hear so much about. I've got no choice but the darted and fitted 40s blouses with low waist (not hipster, way not hipster). Elongate and elegate I say (that was a new OED word I proposed there in case you missed it!:D ).

How is Old Pueblo Trader's quality? The trousers looks cute but they're polyester and so cheap I wonder if they're junky or coarse.

Oh great Heavens! You dont buy their clothes (with the acceptation of the occasional secretary blouse), you get their shoes.

lol I bought a blouse which wasn't TOO bad. I usually look to them more for inspiration. They have a 100% linen skirt that I had my eye on.
