Looking for sources for Breeches...

I've started a search on finding a couple pairs of breeches. I've found a website or two offering them, but at a $100+ price range. I am looking for at least a $60 or below price range. I think I would have better luck finding a pair on the streets. But I don't know where to start. I know for a fact the thrift stores have miliary items like uniforms. I am looking into more of lighter fabric breeches, rather than heavy military ones. I want to get a pair of off white ones or kaki breeches, along with some brown and black ones. Any suggestions on places to look? I'll even go as far as SPECIFIC places around the LA area. I've thought about surplus shops, and so far I've called 5 places, 3 being army/navy surplus, and 2 being vintage, and not one single person knew what the heck I was talking about. But I can't rely on those people. I'm trying to put together a film directors look, not a military, but if I can find a pair of military worth buying, I'd gladly take them.

While you might be able to find something secondhand, I still think the khaki cotton ones I'm wearing in this thread are perfect for what you want. The fabric isn't all that heavy, but should starch up well for a crisp look.

Cheers!

Nick, that's an option as well and they're a great price, but I was thinking those might be too early a style for what he's looking for. Aren't they more appropriate for the Indian or Spanish American War period? Also, they don't seem to have as much flair in the thighs as the WPG version.

Cheers!

If you haven't found then already yourself, go here, then scroll down half way to the picture showing "Breeches, Khaki, Cotton." But if the "...(reaches into wallet, a moth flies out) nooooo!..." was a reaction to the price of the Coon Creek jhods, then the WPG version will really bum you out. However they are worth it.

What size waist do you need anyway, a larger one than 32?

Cheers!

I made myself a pair of breeches from some thrift store 'fat guy pants'. I took a big 'dart' out of the back waist and trimmed away the fabric at the calves. Cost me four bucks. They're by no means authentic or vintage, but close enough the vast majority wouldn't be able to tell. I wore them for the "Sky Captain" opening night.

I wear a 30 by 30. Most of the time I have a lot of trouble finding clothing my size. Right now I'm wearing a pair of 32's with suspenders, but I did that on purpose. :p

I don't want to spend any more than $100. That's just too much for breeches.

Were breeches on used on safari and by pilots, horsemen, motorcyclists, and miliraty officers or what's the story on them? Would you be looked at strangely back in the day if you were just a regular joe wearing breeches?

Probably. I think it was more of a specialist outdoor garment used by those types you mentioned. Someone here posted a link to a picture of several archeologists from the 1920s posed at a dig, and almost all the men are wearing them. Interestingly, two or three are wearing knee socks and ankle boots with their breeches instead of the tall field boots or leather leggings typically associated with the garment.

Cheers!

I do a regular search on e-bay for breeches, since my current pair is green (East German motorcycle cop breeches or some such thing), and I want khaki. Honestly, I see breeches in your size on e-bay all the time, HFLG! (By the way, you need a shorter handle!) I am a 34, so I always curse when they are 28s, 30, and 32s. Depending on how soon you need them (or want them), I would just keep trolling the 'bay. Otherwise I think the Coon Creek breeches are your best bet. Nick, do you have a pair of those? They're on my wish list right now.

WW2 British Motorcyclist's pantaloons (that is the term used on the tag) show up on ebay all the time, especially in your size. they are thick wool twill, with (moleskin?) wear patches inside the thighs. I find them frequently when I search "dispatch rider" or "despatch rider". The small sizes usually go very reasonably in price. I would post a pic of me wearing them, but even though it says I can post attachments,I can't seem to upload them.

Has anyone checked the equestrian supply companies (also a good place to find tall leather field boots)??

They haven't made them in that classic style for decades. Nowadays they're all made from either polyester or stretch cotton/lycra blends and are cut to be very form fitting without the baggy thighs. When I had a horse 20 years ago they had already started making them that way. To make sure though, I just checked Dover Saddlery and State Line Tack and sure enough, they're all form fitted.

Cheers!

Jeep44, you'll need to get an account with a hosting service like photobucket and upload your pics there. Then you can cut and paste the links to them within your posts so they'll show here.

Cheers!

I belong to a few forums where I can just browse my hard drive and post a pic from there-I thought this was the same. I have a Photobucket account,so I guess I will have to do it that way.

I think ebay (buy it now or no one in the right mind is going to bid) and those $55 and $80 ones look good to me. I would like to get those highrised boots. my dad sells a few kinds of boots, but I think I would want tall brown with a rugged leather, rather than shiney new look. Like what you see on hiking boots. Is there such a boot?
