Chautauqua Institution just announced the appointment of a new conductor for their symphony orchestra, Stefan Sanderling. I Googled him to learn more, and found this fascinating interview with his father Kurt Sanderling. Kurt Sanderling was born in Germany in 1912, fled Nazi persectution to Russia in 1936, lived in East Germany for many years, and was close to the great Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich. He was in Leningrad in 1942. Nuff said. Anyway, I found this interview. The man lived an amazing life, and he's still with us at 95.

It's sort of tough sledding, but worth it.

Thanks for noticing! lol
The interview is not for everybody, but fascinating nevertheless. We forget that the whole 20th century was very much NOT a golden age in Russia and eastern Europe in general. Tho they did have many stupendous cultural achievements.
