Lloyd Loom Furniture

Yesterday I purchased a Lloyd Loom mint green clothes hamper. The tag inside says Lloyd Loom, Lusty Collection. I cant seem to find any info on the line or anything else. I will post pictures when I clean the hamper. I prettys sure its not golden era but if anybody can help me that would be great.

Well, Lloyd Loom were very popular in the 1930s. They started in 1922 I believe and are still going making very similar products.

I think being "lusty collection" it will be a latter one, but still very nice.

Thanks for your speedy response! I was able to find one ad on ebay that showed the Lusty collection , the ad was dated to 1956.

If it's an older piece you can normally find the date of manufacture under the label, stenciled on to the wooden frame.

Interestingly, during the war, they made a special chair that was slightly wider then the normal Lusty Llyod Loom chairs. Apparently it was designed for pilots to sit on with their large Irvin jacket and flying gear whilst waiting to scramble.

Salv is right, they dated them underneath.

Thanks all! I do remember while cleaning the hamper down it did have a date stamped on the bottom. Cant remember if it was 1953 or 1956. I will check later(its full of clothes right now).

Lusty Furniture

You might like to know that the Lusty Furniture Company is alive and well in the UK and that we still make classic Lloyd Loom Furniture.

There are many vintage pieces around and we get sent lots of photos by our fans.

A little tip if you're interested, Lusty Lloyd Loom furniture shouldn't be hand painted - only spray painted and if you do want to change the colour you are better off trying to find a paintshop that sprays furniture.

I have inherited two large "Lloyd Loom" armchairs, they were part of a set of six, but my sister Hortense, only wanted four for her rear verandah, she painted hers with a spray, and recomended that I paint mine by hand??? she also used a matt paint where as as I'm going to use a semi-gloss in "clotted cream" , please refer to my thread "How does your garden grow" for more details.

If you can avoid it, take Kenya's advice. Do not hand paint. It makes the furniture look awful. I have seen many vintage hand painted peices, and they barely sell.

If you are going to spray, it has to be done in many thin applications, otherwise it will look bad as well.

I am now considering painting them with a varnish which contains a "Golden" stain,as the chairs will be outside, im thinking this will preserve the aged patina of the wicker, whilst offering some protection?

This is after one coat with a semi gloss varnish with "Rich Walnut" stain added, i will give them another coat, I think I need bigger fatter cushions.

I'm in the process of "Doing up" a patio area with a jungle theme, African tribal masks, black Bamboo plants, and outdoor chandeliers. the Luxury Safari look, these will be perfect when i'm finished with them.

Nice Binks ...you are correct ...the tobacco stained varnish look will be more authentic looking for the verandah.
