Amazing thing! You can search the archives by going to Google images...putting in your search term followed by source:life

Here is the info on the archives from Google's blog:

The Zapruder film of the Kennedy assassination; The Mansell Collection from London; Dahlstrom glass plates of New York and environs from the 1880s; and the entire works left to the collection from LIFE photographers Alfred Eisenstaedt, Gjon Mili, and Nina Leen. These are just some of the things you'll see in Google Image Search today.

We're excited to announce the availability of never-before-seen images from the LIFE photo archive. This effort to bring offline images online was inspired by our mission to organize all the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful. This collection of newly-digitized images includes photos and etchings produced and owned by LIFE dating all the way back to the 1750s.

Only a very small percentage of these images have ever been published. The rest have been sitting in dusty archives in the form of negatives, slides, glass plates, etchings, and prints. We're digitizing them so that everyone can easily experience these fascinating moments in time. Today about 20 percent of the collection is online; during the next few months, we will be adding the entire LIFE archive — about 10 million photos.

I heard about it Wednesday on a vintage bicycle forum. Naturally I typed in the word "bicycle" and came up with quite a few pages of vintage photos of people with their bicycles, including three 1952 photos of a young Eartha Kitt with her bike in New York. Great photos!

Wow. Great images.

These were of interest to me. Taken 1971.
Amazing to think it was only forty years old or so at the time.

Here's a 1975 photo of my Uncle George on the occasion of his enshrinement into the Pro Football Hall of Fame with his presenter, George Halas (NFL founder, Chicago Bear owner/coach), on his right. Before the Life archive was opened to the public it was the only photo to be found on the net of my uncle wearing a suit.

All the other pictures showed him on the gridiron, in a uniform.

Now look what Life had stashed away:

A 1948 photo of my Uncle George (right), all cleaned up, signing his rookie contract with Papa Bear, again, on his right.

This one turned up on a search for Tommy Dorsey.

Caption says "playing his trombone with an orchestra" lol - of course, his orchestra, the great prewar TD outfit with Pee Wee Erwin (nearest Tommy) on trumpet, Mo Purtill on drums and Johnny Mince (nearest Mo) on clarinet/alto. Dated to 1938, presumably summer, on Cape Cod, Mass.

John Cavanagh

Found a photograph of my hatting hero John Cavanagh getting the Neiman Marcus Distinguished Fashion Service Award in 1939. I have an article about this, now I have a photo to go along with it.

There are also photos of his son, John Garvan Cavanagh, after he quit the hatting industry and became a priest.

Neato!

There was an old LIFE photo of a woman that had jumped from a building and landed on a car. She looks like she is peacefully sleeping a car that has its roof bent around her. It is a photo that brings odd feelings.
I would like to see that photo again.

Sincerely,
The Wolf
