Leather & Wool Prices to Increase

I don't know if this has been discussed yet but this message was at the top of an email from USWings:

US Wings New & Sale Items...

First, Some Bad News: A large-scale buy up of leather and wool by Chinese manufacturers has caused a shortage of these materials which will affect domestic manufacturers of leather and wool garments. This shortage will lead to an increase in the price of leather jackets & wool coats. As a result, US Wings will have to increase the price of all leather jackets and wool peacoats by a minimum of 25% in early 2008 (this price increase is not limited to US Wings; all retailers of leather jackets and wool coats will have to similarly increase their prices). US Wings has not had a major price increase of our flight jackets in over a decade (for instance, the $229 retail price of our goatskin A-2 is the same as it was 10 years ago), but this price increase will be unavoidable. Now for some good news...

Might be time to by that Aero I "need". ;)

They probably think that "blaming the Chinese" AND "putting up the prices" are both winners.

I don't understand your tone BT. If this is the truth why is it "blaming the Chinese"? The same thing is happening in the fur industry but that's just economics. He who is willing to spend the most, wins.

^But if it's true that a Chinese buy up is causing the price increase, why is it wrong for them to say it?

I don't know if what they say is true or not, but I do know that the Chinese recently purchased the 'golden bale' of wool recently for the first time. It is the bale that is considered the wool of the highest quality each year.

The Chinese Card.

I'm surprised that they didn't throw in the oil card, as well.

Your comment sounds a bit snarky BT, that's why I ask. We are in a free economy and if they are willing to spend more to get what they want that's fine, just economics. Nobody is BLAMING the Chinese, just offering an explanation as to the increase. Felt has also increased recently due mainly to the Chinese purchasing and thereby creating a price pinch for a limited supply. By explaining this, am I BLAMING the Chinese? It's just fact.

They must be gearing up for that predicted surge of interest in leather jackets and wool fedoras following the upcoming release of the new Indiana Jones film!;)

Regardless, time for me to purchase that new A-2 jacket before prices go even higher.

With all due respect...

"Some Bad News: A large-scale buy up of leather and wool by Chinese manufacturers has caused a shortage of these materials which will affect domestic manufacturers of leather and wool garments. This shortage will lead to an increase in the price of leather jackets & wool coats"

Sure sounds like the Chinese are to blame for an expected price hike in the US domestic market.
By explaining the cause as due to 'foreign' interests(the Chinese), and anticipating that the target market will by 'American Made', it becomes a (given the name and product line of the company) Patriotic price hike. 'Blame' is very useful here.
Doesn't matter if it's true or false- there is definitely a 'tone' of 'blame' in that marketing text.

A web site, as any other commercial medium is obviously about marketing- there can and should be a marketing message in every word and picture(although the USW web site is not a great example).
Otherwise, you're just creating overhead. This is just another opportunity (a great opportunity)to turn a marketing trick and turn a buck.

I get a message from those words and I have explained it.

No Snarky.
