Leather Overcoat, Should I get it altered?

Hi,
I'm new to this site but thought I would ask you guys for your thoughts on my new coat. I just picked it up on ebay. What do you think of the fit and length? Also, does anyone have an idea about the age of this coat? The tags are gone but I do know that it is German. I was told it could be from the 1950s-1970s. I find the sleeves are definitely too long, and I was thinking of having them taken in and maybe asking the tailor to make belt loops out of the cuff once he removes some of the material. Then I would just need to put on some buttons and find a belt.

I usually wear a size 36 for a jacket, sometimes a size 38. The coat does have a size tag for 48 German, which I guess is like a size 38 or 40? The sleeves on the coat measure around 25.5- 26 inches. The shoulders are a little roomy too. The arm length, shoulder to cuff, of my other trench is around 24.5 inches, but it is a slim modern cut with no room for anything but a sweater underneath.

I love the feeling of this coat. It's very comfortable, despite being too large. It has a great satin lining and the leather has a nice patina around the edges.
