I saw that shot of AF years ago and always thought it was cool. Never guessed the hat was a Stylemaster. Now I know it's obvious. I'm not a big fan of that particular Akubra but it's still a great shot.

That is a very good distinction. Back in the day a tie, shoes, or a shirt tucked into trousers that weren't hanging off one's hips were not considered dressing up.
To wear a leather jacket on your own time over your everyday clothes was not an issue.

Exactly. It's a look I do a lot - both on my own time, and on company time. I don't see it as in any way formal. Some jackets work better with it that others. My halfbelts are great for it, especially the cordovan Bootlegger:

I've never done this with the mc style jacket though I wouldn't rule it out. I have with the Highwayman... didn't quite have the ideal look I was after (I suspect due to the boxier fit of it being so much more relatable to the late 50s than the 30s/40s look that this favours).

Check out places that sell longer than normal ties. While only 5'7", a lif'e of weight lifting/bodybuilding and the resultant 18" neck and "high chest" necessitates me having to buy long ties as well so they don't end up mid-chest! (of course shirts are a whole other issue!)

Shouldn't be hard to find these days. I've had to have almost every tie I've bought new in the last few years shortened by 4" to avoid having either a knot the size of my own head or a tie that hands past my crotch (often both).

I am truly jealous Worf! I have at least six more years and I have been counting down the days already (in addition to fanatically checking my investments almost daily!).

The "only" potentially bad part of retiring is that you may have less occasion to wear your jackets, hats, and other clothing items - but I am sure you can find other venues!

Thanks... Yeah, the Bootlegger is a fantastic design. If ever I have all the other jackets I want, it's a model I may come back to for one in a russet goat. I'm seeing that with a Sunburst back.... oh, my. I'd love one with buttons in place of the zip... I've seen photos of Howard hughes wearing something similar.

If I went up to your neck size, I'd be fine with the modern ties, though my vintage items might be on the short side then... I'll enjoy wearing my ties even more after retirement - though it's not that often here in academia that I really would have to wear o0ne if I chose not to. The whole joy of a tie for me is its very purposelessness - it has not a single utilitarian feature to it when I wear one. It's like a good pair of cufflinks, or a nice wristwatch - essentially no need for it today, but it's the sort of detail flourish to a wardrobe that I love.

1930s German/ French DB waist-length jacket, Danish C.D. trews, 1930s brocade tie, and the collar happens to be pinned.

I think leather jackets such as racers and bombers go well with formal wear like dress pants, shirts and ties. Have posted these pictures in another thread but oh well here goes again.

I also combine brown leather jackets with those stone-grey Danish civil defense trousers. Only in cold weather though. They are heavy!

Yes, heavy and surprisingly good. Also great for the lowest degree of formality - the house and chore trouser. The fabric feels like there's some reprocessed wool in it (as in the WWII U.S. Greatcoats). I love the combination of brown and grey, whenever it works.

Another German/French (in this case German, by the Ruhr zip) jacket arrived today, might as well post it here on the pretext of the tie and leather jacket combo - since we still don't have a generic and long-lasting thread for vintage leather jackets.

It's a combination that used to be more popular, into the 50s-60s. I like it best when one color dominates the other, in terms of space used; same with browns and greys. Here the jacket is very short, taking up just a third of the space, and the rest is in blue tones (although the blue tie and shirt is a coincidence).
The trousers are the early 50s USAF wool serge trousers, btw.
