was just watching history channel. saw an old film clip ...probably 1963-1964; LBJ wearing brown open road with a shorter brim, probably 2 1/4 - 2 3/8 inches. anyone familiar with an open road model like this?

LBJ was a Texan and wore hats from a Texas company, Resistol, that made a hat similar to Stetson's "Open Road."

At the time, if a store didn't stock the brim width you wanted, it could be special ordered.

One of my favorite "field of flowers" pics (a Texas tradition) is that of LBJ and Lady Bird near the Pedernales...

...his hat appears to be like the shorter-brim OR style that you are referring to?!

I'm one embarassed American.

So what's to be embarassed about? When I worked in the menswear business many years ago I dealt with several customers like him. Lighten up, I thought it was pretty typical for a man of his type. Plain spoken to a fault. You'd be lucky to sound half as at ease with yourself while speaking with the son of the founder of one of America's largest clothing manufacturers. Kind of brought back pleasant memories of a time long past.

MAJOR EDIT: My wife informed me that I mixed up Ladybird Johnson with Nellie Connally, who was the wife of former Texas Governor John Connally. I apologize for the screw up. We now return you to your previous thread. :)

Cheers!

That's about what my resistol "san antonio" looks like.

San Antonio

I "rescued" what I think is a Resistol San Antonio from a vintage shop. Someone had cut the sweatband out. I had a new sweat put in after giving it a "tweak" to get it to my size. It has the same dimensions as both of my Stetson OR's. I have found no other references to a comparable Resistol other than the San Antonio that fits that description.

That conversation sounds JUST like LBJ. he was an earthy, plain-spoken man....and one hellacious wheeler-dealer.

No one loves to palaver and make deals more than a Texan - and LBJ was noted for his ability to cross the aisle, speak with anyone about anything, and then really put the arm bar on his people when the time came. He was a rara avis, indeed.
