Lavish Film

I was thinking about how the color in modern period pieces really lets you see all the details about the vintage lifestyle: clothes, colors, object normally obscured by a black and white film--details you would normally miss. Some films offer these gems better than others. What film has the a lavish representation of the Golden Era that you respond to most?

Being a writer and lover of literature, "The End of the Affair" is at the top of my current list. I haven't found a film that displays a writer's life, his library, wonderfully displayed books, etc, like that film. The clothes are great. There's even a scene with the male lead shaving (a treat for my retro-masculine sensibilities). There might be another film out there to compete, but I haven't seen it yet.

So, what film is lavishly vintage and most thrills your vintage tastes?

"Tea With Mussolini" and "Julia" are both good. If you want a good Technicolor film showing the 30's you can't beat the original "A Star is Born".

Hmmmm....if we're talking about recently made films then 'Enigma' positively oozes 40's ambience: clothes, hats, uniforms, music, etc. In fact i think if one watched it in black and white one would think it was made in the 40's.
